Ramadan 2016 – Complete the Fasting Until the Sunset
Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, commemorating the appearance of the Archangel Jibril (Gabriel) to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and the revelation to the Prophet of the opening verses of the Qur’an.
Around the world, followers of Islam wait in anxious anticipation for the beginning of Ramadan, when they will once again invest a month in fasting, penance, introspection, charity and spiritual reflection.
Basic
Ramadan (also called Ramzan) is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The fast, from sunrise to sunset, every day of the month, must be observed by all Muslims who are healthy in mind and body and past the age of puberty.
Faithful observance of fasting is one of the five pillars of the faith in Islam, and the pious are encouraged to strictly observe the principles of fasting.
Abstinence
During the daytime, the faithful are enjoined to abstain absolutely, not only from all food and drink, but also from succumbing to the temptation to fulfill other physical needs such as smoking, sexual activity, etc.
The month of Ramadan is about much more than just deprivation of physical and psychological demands.
Reconnecting with God, practicing self-discipline, renouncing negative behavior, giving alms and purifying the soul are an integral part of the month’s observance.
Morning to evening
The fast begins each morning with Al Fajr (morning prayer) and ends each day at dusk with Al Maghrib (sunset prayer).
During the month, this is a daily routine for devout Muslims. Specific categories are exempted from observing the fast – children who have not reached puberty, those who are of age, pregnant women, nursing mothers, menstruating women, those who are not of sound mind, the sick and travelers.
But those who are exempted from observing the fast must feed at least one needy person every day or contribute alms equivalent to the price of a meal for one person for each day that the fast is not observed.
Fasting serves as a reminder of the deprivation experienced by millions of fellow humans who are not sure they have one square meal a day. The faithful praise and thank God for his generosity and gladly share their God-given prosperity with the poor, the needy and the less privileged.
At sunset
The word ‘iftar’ literally means ‘break the fast’ and is most apt to describe the breaking of the fast observed during the daytime hours.
Traditionally, the fast is broken by eating dates and drinking a cup of yogurt or water (but this can vary from country to country). The tradition originates from the action of the Messenger of Allah, who used to break his fast with dates, or if dates were not available, with water.
Sharing
Breaking the fast at sunset is both a family event and a community event. While the family can break their fast in the privacy of their home, iftar also has significance as a communal event. A community of families come together and turn the meal into a social event; one to which the less fortunate members of society are also welcomed.
The spiritual rewards for charitable deeds during the holy month of Ramadan are particularly abundant. Mosques also set up free tents so that no faithful Muslim should be unable to break his fast on the day simply because of the penniless situation or other compelling circumstances.
Ramadan night market
Ramadan is not only about solemnity but also about celebrating the wonderful month.
