The Great Gupte in The West Inies in 1953
Subhash Gupte is recognized as the best spinner India has ever produced. Many like Garfield Sobers rated him as the best leg-spinner in the world. There is no doubt that Gupte was a classic spinner with flight and guile, and his 149 wickets in 36 Test matches is testament to his strength and greatness. This at a time when fielding was never the forte of the Indian team and several catches by Gupte were grassed.
Gupte’s claim to greatness starts with the Indian team’s tour of the West Indies in 1953. The captain of that team was Vijay Hazare, an orthodox right-handed batsman who, unfortunately, was no great captain. His only saving grace was Subhas Gupte throwing his heart out on the dead and concrete like wickets of the West Indies in that series.
In addition, West Indies had the most formidable batting line-up with the famous 3 W’s, Walcott, Weeks and Worrell in the team. Each of them was a great batsman in his own right but when the 3 joined together they created a great batting machine rarely seen in the history of cricket. Walcott, Weeks and Worrell are names to be reckoned with in the history of world cricket. Gupte in that series came face to face with this formidable batting machine.
All 3 were in sublime form in that series but it was Gupte who got the bouquets as he tamed this formidable trio with flight and guile. It was an exhibition of great spin bowling and the 3 Ws treated Gupte with respect. Gupte claimed 27 wickets in that series and the world woke up to the fact that here was a little man who had tamed the ferocious 3 Ws.
All 3 scored heavily and Weeks in particular had a string of scores such as 207.161 and 118 in the 5 test series. But it was Gupte who kept these Ws on a leash. He had no support at the other end with only Vinoo Manked working away, but Gupte was undeterred as he kept the West Indies on a leash with his superb craft. In that series, India lost only 1 test and 4 were drawn, but credit must go to Gupte who beard the 3 Ws in their own den. There can be no greater achievement than Gupte’s. Let’s pay tribute to the ‘little man’ who Jim Laker rated as the best leg-spinner in the world. Gupte later migrated to West Indies and it is India’s loss.
