The Right Farenheit in Jamaica

Named ‘Fahrenheit’ by DJ Don Flash, he sure seems to always have the right temperature, tempo and all that. Terrence Harold, from Jamaican soil, also known as “Farenizzi”, uses his many talents to reveal Jamaica, its people, culture and skills to the world.

As an artist at large, he is an international ambassador for the arts and culture of Jamaica as, in whatever form he chooses – painting, graphic design, silky vocals, music, acting, production for starters, he never ceases to express all it’s jamaican. The prolific artist is equally skilled as a musician, singer, actor and graphic designer, unknown to many.

Born in Kingston, Harold has always loved the arts and his humility and temperate personality reflect the result of someone intimately connected to many forms. “As a child I loved Caribbean music” recalls Harold. He always appreciated the work of the painter Barrington Watson.

Terrence ‘Fahrenheit’ Harold Born in the 70s, to a Portland mother and a Saint Vincentian father, Harold grew up in Kingston. This resulting combination of culture greatly influenced his career, already formed in his youth.

Growing up he listened to music like Jesus Christ, the superstar, Toots, Dennis Brown. At the same time, his visual palette was influenced by the influence of Barrington Watson. Additionally, he had an interest in music/dance while being part of a breakdancer group with the Savage team at Wolmers High. At that time, the Savage crew belonged to the music school, which was located next to the art school.

He later studied graphic design at Edna Manley College, then the Jamaica School of Art. In addition to exploring sculpture and painting, he received voice training from the Cuban teacher, Gorgia Guerra. Guerra has lived in Jamaica for over 20 years and has trained artists including Baby Cham, Alaine, Swade, Christopher Martin, Brian and Tony Gold.

However, the biggest contributors to his development have been his parents, who exposed him to a wide range of music to listen to, including Latin, rock, reggae. Although he possesses good social skills and ‘connections’, life as the multi-faceted artist he is began with a struggle, after Edna Manley College, simply because of his merging hard dancehall with other forms of music.

Now successful in the combined visual and performing arts, exemplary for many others, he says that passion is what mainly accounts for his success. Balancing participation in visual, literary and performing is not difficult for the artist who uses both the left and right sides of his brain. Not to mention the vocals that play seductive melodies on your inner being like a piano. He encourages artists to stay committed given his own challenges on the way to the top. He remembers, for example, the many applications he sent to the theatre. Harold’s first theater appearances were ‘Redemption’ and ‘Against his Will’ by David Herron. He has also done Dirty Diana at Centrestage.

He later moved to television and secured a role in Royal Palm Estate (Produced by Mediamixx 2003-2004). His international roles spanned Almost Heaven (German film-red howzing). Interestingly, Terrence was a Kymani stunt. He doubled in One Love and starred in Goat Head (produced by Paul Bucknor). He has a role in the upcoming Better Mus Come, a Storm Saulter film production coming out soon.

Fahrenheit CD cover His training in graphics is balanced with his music, as he designs all his CD covers, and for a few other artists. His work includes logos for example Brand New Machine (his latest project), Lottery Company 2003, Markham Betting 2000.

A few CDs designed by him are Fringe to Fore 1999, Port Antonio Virgin 2007 and the upcoming Red Cup College scheduled for release in 2010. Music is perhaps where he is most successful, or popularly known as rock /reggae musician and singer.

His first song was recorded by Dr. Paul from the Ruff Cut crew from the Shabba Ranks band. Among the songs he has produced for himself are Looga Man, Kid Kurup, Jovi Rockwell. He has also featured in some of internationally acclaimed singer Sean Paul’s music, such as Bubble, a ringtone created for mobile phones.

Harold sees the combined arts as being crucial to the development of society. He believes that “as a nation we need to support the art form in schools”. The passionate artist blames the lack of music lessons or sessions in colleges as a major problem.

Harold’s latest project is Brand New Machine, which started last year in December. Co-hosted with Steve Wilson every Wednesday, Brand New Machine presents a different theme to patrons at the Fiction Lounge. Fashionista reveals local designers; Paparatzi birthday celebrationsz for celebrities; Red cups + lollipops are for spirrrpy party madness. Then there are exhibitions to expose local visual artists, including painters, and photographers and literary writers.

To the young, Harold’s advice is “Stay focused; stay true to your art form and stay passionate: don’t be disgruntled when you’re broke… some things will give if you’re real about it.”
