The Great West Indian Captain Clive Lloyd
The Australian tour of the Clive Lloyd team was a disaster in 1975. They were humiliated on and off the field. Australian fast bowlers not only destroyed their confidence by defeating them 5-1 but also terrorized with pace and enemy fast bowling. In the result, captain Clive Lloyd began to think about changing his tactics and style of play.
His attacking line of four genuine fast bowlers really worked for him as captain in the years to come. He began scouting for fast bowlers from across the Caribbean. He already had the services of Andy Roberts and Michaels, the inclusion of Colin Croft and later Joel Garner made this pace attack a hostile and fearsome one. This famous foursome fearsome pace attack was the start of the dominance of Clive Lloyd’s West Indies team.
Clive Lloyd was one of the most successful West Indian captains. He led his team in a record 27 consecutive Tests without a single defeat. As captain, he won 36 Test matches including a world record 11 consecutive victories at the time. He played as captain from 1974 to 1985. Lloyd had made his team the most successful side ever and only the Australian side of the late 90s can match them in some respect.
The West Indies dominance in cricket started from February 1980 and ended in March 1995. During that period West Indies never defeated in a single Test series. As with most successful captains, Lloyd won two World Cups and was runner-up in the third.
The golden era of West Indian cricket from 1980 to 1995 was only because of the foundation made by Captain Lloyd. He combined various islands into a single real team named “West Indies”. Before this, players from various islands did not seem desperate to play for the West Indies as they showed under Lloyd’s captaincy. This clearly makes Clive Lloyd one of the most successful captains of all time.
Clive Lloyd was also a good middle-order batsman. Although he is famous because of his reputation as one of the most successful and great captains of all time, but this is a fact that he was more than a good batsman. He averaged 46.67 in Test cricket, including some great knocks under pressure that show how good he was with the bat. In his torrid career he scored 7515 runs in 110 Tests he played.
Statistically, Captain Lloyd is the second most successful West Indies captain after Viv Richards. Australian captain Steve Waugh and former West Indies captain Viv Richards have better win/loss ratios than Lloyd as captain. But the work he has done for his team is unmatched in the history of the game.
