ICC World Cup 2011 – Sri Lanka, Bangladesh Venues

ICC World Cup 2011 will be hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh; the venues in these countries have been completed.

Initially, Pakistan was also a co-host with some matches to be held in that country. According to this plan, Bangladesh’s participation would be limited to hosting the opening ceremony.

In April 2006, citing security concerns, the ICC decided not to allow Pakistan to host any match in the World Cup, although it retained Pakistan as co-host.

Pakistan tried to salvage the situation by stating that the matches awarded to it would be held in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah instead of Pakistan.

When this move failed, Pakistan tried to save face by demanding that the event be hosted by Australia and New Zealand, who had also bid for the trophy.

As things eventually turned out, the ICC stuck to its guns and the tournament will be hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Three venues have been named in Sri Lanka, which will host some group matches and a semi-final. Apart from Colombo and Kandy, Hambantota is the third place that will host during the tournament.

The games in Colombo are played at the Premadasa Stadium, which has a capacity of 35,000.

Premadasa will be the venue for 5 Group A matches including a match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan that will be its first World Cup attraction on March 10, 2011.

Premadasa will also proudly host a quarter-final and a semi-final on March 24 and 29, 2011 respectively.

New stadiums are being built in Kandy and Hambantota. The Pallekele International Stadium under construction in Kandy will, like the Premadasa in Colombo, have a capacity of 35,000.

This stadium will host 3 Group A matches, starting with a match between Pakistan and New Zealand on March 8, 2011.

Hambantota’s Suryawewa Stadium, also under construction, will seat slightly less than its counterparts in Kandy and Colombo, and 33,000 spectators will be able to watch matches held here during the World Cup.

This stadium will host its first match on 20 February 2011 when hosts Sri Lanka take on Canada in a Group A encounter. Only one other (group) match is scheduled to be played here.

Bangladesh will use two venues to host the World Cup matches awarded to it by the ICC. Apart from the capital Dhaka, Chittagong will also feature in the itinerary of teams traveling to Bangladesh during the tournament.

Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium has been on the international cricket map for several years and has a capacity of 35,000.

This stadium has been honored with the allocation to it of the tournament opener between co-hosts India and Bangladesh in a Group B match scheduled for 19 February 2011.

Three other Group B matches are scheduled to be played at this venue, which will also host two of the quarter-finals on 23 and 25 March 2011.

Chittagong’s 20,000 capacity Divisional Stadium will be the second venue for the World Cup matches to be held in Bangladesh next year.

Bangladesh will face England in a Group B match here on 11th March 2011. Another Group B match has been allocated to this venue.

The tournament culminates at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where the winning semi-finalists meet to decide the world champions.
