The World Cup in 2006 was to be our year to show the world that we belong on the world stage in football. The Americans boasted a team with some international experience and a hunger to show the world they belonged. Coming into the 2006 World Cup, the USA team was ranked 5th in the world by FIFA. Another big sign of hope was that the Americans reached the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup, giving everyone hope that this could be the year it all came together. For one of the first times I could remember people in America actually being excited about the World Cup.
The first soccer game for the USA was against the dangerous Czech Republic. The USA put in a weak performance and were dominated by the Czechs 3-0. This loss was a big blow to the US Soccer team’s psyche, but it would help them focus in their next game. One of the best teams in the tournament, Italy was next in line for the Americans, so things looked bleak. It looked like Team USA would disappoint again. However, the American soccer team showed the skills and toughness that everyone expected to see from them this year, fighting to a 1-1 draw with the Italians. When Ghana beat the Czech Republic, American soccer once again had an opportunity. If Italy beat the Czechs and the USA won against Ghana, the Americans would be in the quarterfinals of the World Cup again. Italy beat the Czech Republic, but the USA suffered a very disappointing loss to Ghana, 2-1.
After a disappointing first-round exit from the 2006 World Cup, the US soccer team fell from 5th to 16th in the FIFA world rankings. This was a major setback in the American’s struggle to reach the top in football. However, we will not be disappointed for long, because the soccer women are lining up to do well at the upcoming World Cup. Once again, we will have to pin all our hopes on the women’s soccer team winning on the world stage.
