Sri Lanka is Slated to Win the World Cup 2007

Sri Lanka has played cricket like chess. They have played up to potential on the pitch like other pitches, but you will notice a planning strategist behind their World Cup campaign. We have also discussed their strategy earlier and had always backed them to be the finalists.

In fact, New Zealand also copied them and kept Styris and Oram out of their match against Australia – a wonderful copy – because if they were to face Australia again, they would have a different team to the one that lost to Australia in the Super 8, ensuring that there is no psychological advantage to the winning team.

Finally, Australia and Sri Lanka are in the final. Full marks to both for a relentless campaign. If you look at both, there is a difference in the way they approach the games. Australia approaches them in an office like fashion and plays to inherit the full potential every time. Here lies the difference. Sri Lanka play a different game in crucial matches. Murali’s grin widens and so does his seriousness. Vaas and Malinga don’t even give a little space in the first 10 overs. And this strategy is yet to be revealed to the Australian openers. Sri Lanka are also tightening the screws in the middle overs through Murali and Jayasuriya (who seems to be the easiest target for the batsmen between these tough bowlers, hence the batsmen try to go for the kill here and wickets start falling). Sri Lanka and Australia are the only teams not trying to contain the scoring, their only aim is to get the team out.

It’s not about playing to potential, it’s more about not exposing your cards, especially the joker (Lasitha Malinga in this case).

There are 2 theoretical possibilities:

1. The Joker plays to potential and destroys the Australian batting line 2. The Australian team focuses on destroying the Joker so much that the other bowlers destroy the team.

It’s not whether they get to win or not, but it’s in their best interest not to show their Joker, which by the way is also their least undocumented and researched weapon. This might not work for weaker teams, but when you have Vaas and Murali in the attack, you can take those chances.

In comparison, Australia are psychologically weaker in the spin department – with Shane Warne’s exit, the big man of the match. A similarly unexposed/unproven weapon in their end, Hogg doesn’t exactly categorize as an “other” bowler in terms that Murali on Malinga would. And without the big stage exposure – I expect Jayasuriya (if McGrath doesn’t get him) to take him to the cleaners. It will be an interesting match anyway.

Onedayers.com has a different ranking system than ICC and sure if you go by this you would be better placed to predict in Twenty20 World Cup. I used the same system to predict the following:

It seeded Ireland as No. 6 before the World Cup. It predicted the Bangladesh bowling attack to be one of the best in the World Cup (unfortunately, their batting was not up to the same standards). It also put Sri Lanka as the team to watch ahead of the World Cup if Jayasuriya maintains his form. That’s what Jayasuriya predicted as the man to watch!

There was no guessing, but it was this ranking system that was used. Well, in the last match I would put my money on Sri Lanka as both teams have a successful set of bowlers and batsmen but Sri Lanka have huge variety in their bowling.
