India Down Under: Time for Test Captain Dhoni to Go?

A few months ago no one would have thought that but the cat is out of the bag now-is it time to end MS Dhoni as Test captain? The man and the tactics that have taken India to the pinnacle of any other captain – T-20 Champions, ODI World Cup, Asian Championships and the highest Test Side – are now being questioned. Is it curtains for Dhoni, the Test captain, then?

Is Captain Cool’s era over?

Dhoni’s talent though has always been his cricketing skills that separate him from the rest. Years ago when no one was ready to take on the responsibility of finishing against West Indies in the final of the Hero Cup it was Sachin Tendulkar who only solved captain Azharuddin’s problem by grabbing the ball and delivering six magic balls.

Things were different with Dhoni. Here was a captain who didn’t think twice and just bowled to Joginder Sharma in the last over of the T-20 World Cup. The dressing room shows that when Sehwag was bowling furiously Dhoni dropped him and got Yusuf Pathan instead to open India at the same octane end.

Dhoni’s out-of-the-box thinking has done the team good and while they seem like smart cricketing decisions, his decisions, in retrospect, are like lucky breaks. And the lucky thing is that it usually ends. With six straight outs in Test wins everything about Dhoni seems wrong. The only question bigger than Dhoni’s future as a Test captain is if not Dhoni then who? The only contender is Virender Sehwag and if newspaper reports are to be believed then it seems he has already started knocking on the door.

Would axing MSD as a Test Manager be too cruel? There have been controversies about both sides but what seems to be going in Dhoni’s favor is that he still looks like the best man to lead. Kapil Dev thinks Dhoni can be blamed more if the big guns – Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman along with Sehwag – are not firing on all cylinders. But the opposite is up to the captain to spend his wealth properly? Above all, Dhoni’s unusual decisions like changing the bowlers which are effective in the middle, or playing more defensive and setting the platform for disasters, which have been many in recent times.

There comes a time in every captain’s tenure when the future looks bleak and this is the time of Dhoni, the Test Captain. Dhoni’s mind which was conceived outside the box seems to have entered the box inside the box and seems to be working from there. As a stand-in captain Sehwag has had a great reputation and who knows the swagger that strikes fear in any opposition bowler will be more controlled once the big responsibility is on his shoulders. If Sourav Ganguly came out all guns blazing and Dhoni like Dravid and Anil Kumble showed more restraint than bravery, Sehwag would probably combine Dhoni’s one-day brilliance in a five-day format better than the same man. If nothing else, Sehwag can stop throwing his strings around and that alone can make a difference in India.
