Borovets – The Oldest Ski Resort in Bulgaria

Borovets is one of the oldest sports resorts in Bulgaria and is located on the edge of the Sofia district north of the Rila Mountains. It is only 10km from the town of Samakov and 73km from the capital.

Borovets dates back to 1896 and was originally a hunting lodge for the old Bulgarian kings. Gradually overtime it was made into a gym and more budget and luxury hotels appeared. As it is only an hour away from the capital it is an easy trip for residents of Sofia and for those flying into the capital’s international airport.

In 1981 and 1984 Bovorets participated in the World Cup Alpine Skiing and also has one of the best Biathlon tracks in the world.

Much has been made in recent years of the Super Borovets project, which was designed to connect the town of Samakov to the ski resort with a gondola, create a high-speed ski resort and connect the chalet and housing developments with skiing. Ir was one of the biggest and most expensive and famous Bulgarians. The idea was to divide the area into three separate areas. There will be a new development around the town of Samakov, which is ten kilometers away. This will have a major impact on accommodation and will provide another 5000 hotel rooms for the slopes. Level 2 will house the existing gym after extensive renovations and will be the main residential area. Level 3 is a luxury accommodation with only 2,500 hotel rooms.

However, the project was supposed to start in 2004 and will be completed by 2009 but it has faced many problems, including concerns from environmental groups about the impact of the environment on the environment and wildlife and of course the economic damage that affected the plans. Now the plan is to rebuild 19 ski pistes and 12 new lifts, including a lift connecting Samakov with the main area, so that the area will be around 90km.

As it is, Borovets has about 58 km of groomed pistes ranging from 1350 meters to 2560 meters and most of them end in the center of Borovets offering smaller and smaller accommodation. There are currently a variety of lifts, chairlifts and several gondolas. A number of modern lifts have been installed to take people to the peak and to speed up the climb of the mountain. All in all, Bovorets can now take 8150 people up the mountain in one hour. Night swimming is also offered.

The ski area is currently divided into two areas, a small area with runs that end at the resort and then a second area that is much larger and accessible by gondola. The resort is rated as good for beginners and intermediates. Advanced exercisers will find it to be limited.

There was a cross-country skiing event, but the 35 km race seemed not to be enough, so it is being reorganized.

Borovets is easy to get to. The nearest airport is Sofia with regular flights by EasyJet and Wizz Air as well as Bulgarian Air and British Airways. Several major cruise lines sell holidays there including Crystal, First Choice and Balkan Holidays.
