Professional Women’s Softball – The International Softball Federation and Its Teams
Softball is not nearly as popular as baseball, but with the creation of the women’s National Pro Fastpitch League, it is gaining popularity in the US as a live and televised sport. Regardless of its popularity, however, softball is widely played at elementary, high school, and college levels across the country. But where do the players go after graduation? There are several options for post-grad softball: playing nationally and internationally.
Although softball has not gained anywhere near the popularity of American teams around the world, there has been success in international organizations. The International Softball Federation hosts local, regional, national and international tournaments. They also work closely with the International Olympic Committee to organize the Olympic Games every four years for the summer games.
The International Softball Federation organizes the world championships in women’s and men’s softball and all low-level sports. Apart from Africa, most continents are well represented. There are nineteen countries represented in Africa, mainly the most developed in the south-south and south-west horn. There are thirty-four countries in North, Central and South America, twenty-one countries in Asia, thirteen in Oceana and forty countries in Europe.
Every year there are regional competitions and international events. The Women’s World Championship is held once every four years. Sixteen teams compete after winning various qualifying matches. The United States has won the most gold medals, with eight, followed by Japan, Australia and New Zealand, with one each. Softball has been played as part of the Olympic Games since 1996.
It is not surprising that America often takes gold in international competitions; Although softball is played in other countries, nowhere is it as popular as it is here, where many girls play either recreationally or academically.
