The Fun of Giving Awards

I volunteer at Camp Med, an approved childcare program supported by the City of South Pasadena, to improve their playtime. During the summer approximately eighty children aged 5-11 participate.

As for my background, I have had the opportunity to participate in the Olympics every two years and other sports events and have received souvenirs and souvenirs.

Two years ago, at the end of summer camp, I felt compelled to give out an award. In front of the other campers I read the news and presented the Athens Olympics watch to ours:

Honor Camper

Your consideration and care are greatly appreciated. Nice words you have

talking to your fellow campers and to the counselors did not go carelessly. Your efforts and good sportsmanship have been Olympian. To honor you, Camp Med wants to give you a special watch that celebrates the Olympics and calls you our Honor.

Camp.

This caused great excitement among the children, so that the following summer, they asked me if I would give another watch. I did, along with eight other prizes. I also gave out random prizes throughout the summer. This is what I learned during this time.

IT WILL BE GOOD

Growing up as a child, half of the awards I received were natural. These awards meant nothing to me, although some of them were large marble trophies. The most exciting award I received was a small blue ribbon in the second grade that said “Most Outstanding.” I loved the award because it was true and authentic.

One of the individual awards of the summer went to a boy whose math team won district, then regional, then western and then national championships and he’s incredibly political Mr. Spock-like persona:

The Pythagorean Prize

Pythagoras was a mathematician in ancient Greece. He believed that numbers are the ultimate reality. Pythagoras was also known as a keen observer, a close friend of many people and a very intelligent person.

Camp Med You have been very fortunate to have Pythagorean among us and we honor you now.

He received the explosion of Pythagoras.

INSTRUCTIONS

I always give the child a copy of the speech as a reminder of what was said and as something to show their parents. Speeches are usually short, children are eager to see what the prize is (the prize is always wrapped or covered) and find out who is receiving it. Therefore, in a few words, try to explain the meaning:

Goodness Award

I recognized your goodness from day one. It’s a pleasure to have you here at Camp Med.

Children also like rewards that sound good. These received their attention:

Ninja Soccer Girl

You are like a Ninja on the field, calm, graceful, very efficient and determined. It’s great to see you on the field with the ball.

I wanted to suggest to this humble young man that he is NOW capable of doing special things on the football field:

Soccer King

You’ve done well all summer, but what impressed me the most was your heart. You are ready to play in small groups against a group of children.

There is something poetic about your game. You know when to pass, when to position yourself, when to run, bend the ball and lead the field.

ABUNDANT RECYCLING

During the summer, my wife and I were cleaning out our garage. He found a beautiful pin with small stones. He didn’t want to, but I saw an opportunity, one of our best football players in the camp was also the best dressed.

Camp Med Soccer Girl

There was a day in the middle of summer when you had a great game. You were in the zone. Defensively, you took the ball away from anyone who came towards you, and then shot the ball or passed it very well. You did this for 45 minutes straight. It was a lot of fun to watch.

I worked at the 1994 World Cup and received a small silk scarf to celebrate the occasion. Where does one find a happy home for such a thing?

Best Girls Award

This summer, you didn’t just start shooting at goal, you started scoring goals.

It’s been a pleasure getting to know you better. You bring a stylish and stylish look to Camp Med.

I remember that this girl graciously took out a large handkerchief from her box and then calmly and carefully folded it again. In the careful way he handled the scarf, I could tell he appreciated it.

When I set my goal this summer to give awards, I found that there was an interesting job. In the case of the soccer girl, I knew I wanted to give her an award and then the award appeared. In the case of the scarf, the prize was revealed and then the perfect recipient was revealed. This was done throughout the summer. As each new revelation comes, I feel like I’m breaking the code. I never thought there would be nine awards, maybe three. Strangely, it seems like I’m not in charge, I’m just listening, coordinating and moving and moving.

IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE MONEY

In one game, the rubber tip of the plastic hockey stick broke. At the end of the game, I announced that the MVP of the game would receive the rubber tip. This only confused the children and they all wanted to receive it. There was a buzz of excitement in the air. The kids taught me that prizes can be silly too.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY

Meanwhile at home, we went through our Christmas decorations that filled our garage. I thought, well, if kids want the rubber tip of a hockey stick, they’d probably like Christmas stuff and announced that for one week (when it was 90 plus degrees in Southern California) that it would be Christmas in July and I. will be giving away Christmas items all week. Every day, I would bring a brown bag with a Christmas item inside and the kids couldn’t wait for the prize giving ceremony to see what was inside.

Within a week, a young man came to me and said he wanted an award. I asked him what he wanted and he said without hesitation, “I want Santa.” All children wanted a reward, but with this boy, there was also a need for gratitude.

The next day, I brought my brown bag. He came up to me quickly and asked if I was his Santa, he was eager and happy. At the end of the game hour, I gave her a brown bag and told her she was getting this award for being the sweetest inside. He opened it and let out Santa. The kids cheered and shot him. He stood in awe of his Santa, vulnerable, wide-eyed, receiving all the help. Later he told me seriously that he felt, “a little embarrassed.” It was one of the most beautiful moments of the summer.

It’s an example of how in action (giving Christmas in July), the opening sometimes magically happens for something big to come forward.

FREECYCLE.ORG

Not everyone has a full garage. There is an amazing, free organization called freecycle that is dedicated to reducing landfill waste. Members play give and take, ask for what they want and send what they have to give. You can send an email to the group asking what you want, for example: antique trophies and jewelry, children’s toys in good condition, etc. You’ll probably get some really cool stuff, all at no cost.

OFFERING THE WATCH

A watch is the perfect reward. It can be modern, stylish and fun. It is useful. You can take it to school. It’s with you all day. It feels special. Children love them. This was the speech of this year’s clock recipient:

MVS Award for Outstanding Contribution

After a few days of Summer Camp, I knew, from your supportive actions, that you deserve an award. It turns out that what I found for you, however, was sold in Southern California and Oregon and Minnesota. I finally found a store in Chicago, Illinois that had the last one.

I’m very much obliged to you. I thank you so much, words can not say.

This award goes to someone who has been my right hand and has been amazing and supportive during Summer Camp.

This November, Sixty minutes he did something Millennium Kids whose childhood he said was “full of trophies and accolades”. The paradigm represented here is completely different: heartfelt recognition and gratitude for children who, by their very presence, give more than they receive.

THE END

As a child, I used to ask myself, “Am I worth it?” “Who I am?” “I’m fine with what?” Strongly, some awards gave me answers. The answers were obvious (I’m good at swimming, for example), but on a deeper level, the things were constant reminders that I was good. Rewards can go a long way in helping a child’s self-esteem.

As an adult, I found the way to be a gift giver to be a powerful way to connect with a young person. It can be done through humor, drama or fun. It’s an honest and direct way to say, “I love you.”
