Bachmann Model Trains
One of the most fun aspects of building a model railroad for many is buying trains and trains. This can also be the most expensive part of entertainment; however there are several types of train stations that offer basic equipment at affordable prices. Bachmann is one of these brands and provides the perfect starting point. This article takes a brief look at the interesting history of Bachmann trains and the models available.
Bachmann was discovered as early as 1833, around the time of the first railways in England. They didn’t make model railroad stuff but made of all the stuff, crap!
After World War II, Bachmann created a product that became a household name. “Plasticville USA”. These were a few different types of plastic housing that you can use on your model railroad. It wasn’t until 1966 that Bachmann entered the model railroad market in N scale due to the increasing availability of that scale at the time.
Today Bachmann has expanded worldwide and manufactures a wide range of passenger cars. They now have N-scale, HO-scale, G-scale and On30 trains which are basically O-scale trains running on HO tracks to represent railroads. Bachmann also plans to move to O scale soon.
In 1988 Bachmann introduced a range of trains that attracted the highest level of control. The “Spectrum” model had more detail, better design, better motors and more original paint schemes. Since Bachmann had a good reputation for basic and affordable railways, the Spectrum range acted as a separate company from Bachmann in an attempt to build Spectrum’s reputation as a high quality product.
The prices of Spectrum products were at the lower end of the scale so in 1992 Bachmann introduced an intermediate product called Bachmann plus. Later all Bachmann trains were changed to a supplementary series and the combination was removed from the name and all Bachmann trains became a silver series in 1997.
Bachmann will ensure that all its trains are brought up to DCC (Digital Command Control) standards where a small device must be installed in the locomotive to receive digital signals to control the train. Most Bachmann trains today are DCC ready out of the box.
Bachmann manufactures North American, British, German and Chinese trains and trains. In Britain the “Bachmann Branch-Line” model is used for the OO trains in Britain and Graham Farish is used for the N scale. Graham Farish was the famous designer of the N trains that Bachmann bought in 2001. In Germany the name “Liliput” it is given to German railways.
Bachmann makes a variety of train sets that will get you started with tracks, tracks and guides all included.
So when it’s time to buy your train, be sure to check out Bachmann’s entry-level, affordable stock.
