The truth is, with these wonderful and mysterious thoughts of ours that we know so little about, these links if unknowingly traveled can lead to places you wouldn’t otherwise go. You can start out bright and end up in a black hole. Let me give you an example of a path I’ve taken recently without really thinking about it.

The other day I decided to check out the website of one of my all time favorite musicians, Arlo Guthrie. Arlo Guthrie is a folk musician, the son of another famous musician Woody Guthrie. When I was a little kid, one of the coolest things to do was listen to his story/song ‘Motorcycle Song’. So, I found his website through a Google search and it was very good, and very good. Guthrie runs a charity and multi-faith center where he raises money to help the sick and give poor people a place to pray, meditate or just get off the streets.

So, I’m reading all about Arlo in his bio and there’s a link to his trial in the famous Chicago Seven court case. Well, being a guy who had never heard of this story before, my interest was piqued and I clicked on the link. Then I read Arlo’s funny comments about the time he got arrested for littering in a restricted area on Thanksgiving because the pond was closed. Yes, if you know about Guthrie you would know that his famous song Alice’s Restaurant was based on this story. I get to the bottom of the court records and there is a link to the ‘Notorious Trials’ website that the Chicago Seven case was a website for.

Don’t think, I click on the page and start sorting without thinking about all the famous court cases mentioned. Remember, I used to look after my old friend Arlo, now I’m in the world of law and crime. I met this crazy face: Charles Manson, and for some unknown reason I clicked on his court case. I don’t know much about the guy, but maybe it’s because both my parents are x-hippies and he was of their time…

Now I am spending an hour of my time (and nothing is more important than time, except love and peace) reading about the brutal murders of the Manson Family as his group of devoted followers was called. I didn’t see myself as interested in such bad things, and I don’t, because my feeling after the incident was disappointment, frustration and wonder how people could do such evil things.

In the end, following a mindless connection path led me to a much darker place than where I started. I don’t know if I could have spent an hour of my life reading about Charles Manson any other way. Not my cup of tea you know. I like peaceful music, comic books, Tai Chi and foreign movies. This can be taken as a sign that we should be cautious, cautious and cautious when searching the Internet. It is indeed a wealth of knowledge, and like all things there is a dark side and a light side. Be careful Dorothy, the yellow brick path can lead to the wicked witch and the wonderful world of Oz.
