Are You Brave Enough to Have Lunch in Spain?

Let’s have lunch!

Get ready to hear these three scary words!

Hello! I have lived in Spain for almost twenty years. My wife is Spanish, my friends are Spanish, my clients are Spanish and the business is Spanish. During these years I think I have learned a lot about “being Spanish”.

If you want to break into the fast-growing Spanish market, you need to know more than just Spanish. You need to understand Spanish culture, Spanish culture and Spanish business culture. Otherwise, you’ll just be another American trying to “sell the Spanish”.

Often the most profitable place to do business in Spain is at a table in a nice, expensive restaurant. Spanish people love to eat, and it’s no wonder. Spanish cuisine and food are famous all over the world. They have amazing ingredients and the “Mediterranean cuisine” is known all over the world. But if you’re not careful, a Spanish business lunch can leave you reeling back in your hotel room!

First of all, it is good to know how the people of Spain take care of their days. Breakfast is very light, and lunch can last more than four or five hours! The “hora de comer” or lunch hour is usually around 2 p.m., and most companies return to work at half past four. In the summer this leaves plenty of “siesta” time.

Although Spanish people don’t have big lunches every day, (otherwise they wouldn’t be able to fit all the clothes of the organizers!) you have to understand that if they are hosting a guest they will probably go out of their way to entertain you. If it’s your turn to pick up the check they’ll be smart enough to let you decide, but they’ll keep an eye on it. If you scrimp, you will pay later.

So be prepared. A business lunch starts with “tapas” or appetizers over beer. Then the two main courses are a bottle of wine (or two), desert, coffee and usually an alcoholic drink. So it’s back to work!

Americans often associate drinking with drunkenness, but in Spain alcohol is an important part of any celebration. Remember that they have never met Calvin, and they probably laugh while listening to a southern baptist sermon. So if you don’t drink, even if it’s unusual, they will understand. Even still, if you’re taking the check, make sure and insist that they order whatever they want to drink.

On the other hand, if you drink, be careful. Spanish people are always very generous and your cup will never be empty! Go slowly and remember that after lunch you probably have another three hours of work ahead of you. When you go through the water, they just laugh and share a wink or two. But when you go you will be the talk of the town for days!

Eating in Spain is a wonderful experience. Almost everything they serve you is worth tasting, even if it sounds strange. Be brave and have fun.
