Charlton Athletic will approach the 2006/07 season without former manager Alan Curbishley, who ended 15 years at The Valley in the summer. Iain Dowie is the man who led the Addicks to better things, but his transition from Crystal Palace has not been smooth sailing.
The former Northern Ireland international received a notice from his former employers Palace to “stand in for fraud” after leaving Selhurst Park. Chairman Simon Jordan said he only released Dowie to move closer to his family in the North West, but Dowie took a short trip across London instead.
Dowie has signed former Dutch midfielder Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink from Middlesbrough. The 34-year-old is seventh in the Premier League’s all-time top scorer list, having scored 125 goals in 263 games for Middlesbrough, Chelsea and Leeds United. Despite his age, his appetite for goals shows no signs of slowing down and he scored 34 goals in 89 appearances for Middlesbrough.
Hasselbaink is expected to form a good partnership with last season’s top goalscorer Darren Bent, who ended speculation over his future at the club by signing a new four-year contract. Despite scoring 18 Premier League goals last season, making him England’s top scorer, he was left out of England’s World Cup squad and was linked with a £10 million move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Leeds United youngster Simon Walton, who made his debut at the age of 16 in the 2004/05 season, has joined in a £500,000 deal as captain Luke Young has signed a new four-year contract ending rumors of a move to West Ham United. Young has played 158 games for the Addicks from Tottenham Hotspur in 2001.
Judgment
Charlton could do well with a new face in charge and will be a threat in attack with the addition of Hasselbaink. The Addicks can build on their 2003/04 campaign and finish in the top 10.
