How to Turn Around a Losing Soccer Team

Below is a letter I received from a football coach who was losing and wanted to know how to improve his team.

Hi SoccerHelp,

Since my first letter we have been progressing in various ways. The next football match we played, we won 3-0. I moved player 3 back to stop half the game and used player 9 at stopper in the second half. The boys played really well and I thought I could break the rules for different boys to play.

But the next week we lost again. We were prepared to play a team that by all means, we should have even, or based on our performance last week, beaten. We lost 5-1. My boys played with absolutely no energy and I was very disappointed to see them spin around as they watched the other team run through them. At least half of the team was playing as spectators. Most of the football goals were scored because my defenders were out of the game and not attacking the ball.

We lost our game last week 8-0. I started playing my strong players in the opening positions to try to keep the score low and the morale high. We play number one and we started to play well, but we couldn’t change anything in front of the ball, because our attacking players didn’t finish and we gave up three goals in the first half. because our football defenders were irresponsible. Again, we saw each other a lot on the court and after a while the defenders I had, who had not played aggressively since they stopped playing. I took one player out because he stopped moving, it was like watching the Bad News Bears play football. Towards the end, even my best players quit.

Obviously I’m not doing well in my football coaching. What are some things I can do to try to help guys play their game? We cover it in football practice so often but it just doesn’t seem to sink in? Also, what are your thoughts on even playing with children? I have good players to build a good team, but usually half of the team at any given time is on the unskilled side. I’m trying to give everyone equal time, but when the kids don’t try I think I’ll take them out (I didn’t do this because it would mean other players would stay all the time).

Teacher T

Hi Coach T,

I want to encourage you not to get too upset about your loss to the first team. It’s very important that you make sure — remember that you HAD to lose to that team. What happened was that your team felt that they could not win and withdrew from the second round. It’s not pretty, but it makes sense, and it’s useful (Why keep killing yourself if you can’t win? It just wastes your energy. I think it’s better to just accept that it’s not your day and focus on the next game. . Save your efforts for the teams you have a chance to win). I recommend telling your team that they are doing well but the opposition were better that day and losing the game is no shame. It is very important that you have a clear vision of your team and what they can do. You are not a miracle worker and you cannot do the impossible. All you can do is do the best you can with the talent, speed, brutality, and practice time you have. You HAVE to be defeated by a good and fast team – all you can do is minimize the damage and try to keep your team’s morale and confidence from taking a hit.

I have some ideas for you to consider:

1. Do you sneer at work? If you do, stop being cynical. Children play with more enthusiasm in their real matches if they do not practice.

2. I see you use metal patches with your band. Your main needs are aggressive play, defense and scoring, so I only provide patches for those three things. I would recommend a patch NOT ONLY for scoring, but ONLY FOR ONE – if your players do the right thing, they will start scoring. Once they learn to score, you may want to stop giving them score patches, but for now you need to teach them to score. Your team must also have a DESIRE TO WIN. If you get more patches, buy V and A patches… when you win, make more. Don’t give patches to get them to participate – give them effort, efficiency and persistence. The exception may be the test section, but you can give one for every two or three tests. Participating in physical activity is essential to your team’s success.

3. To stay motivated, try the Motivational articles on Premium… I read them myself.

4. Do you play the Dribble Around Cone & Pass Relay Race Practice Game? Use it to teach Aggressive Receiving – this is important – your players need to be aggressive to win the ball. Play in pairs and give the winners a patch. You will get better, faster results by focusing on Aggressive Receiving than you will on passing – Aggressive Receiving is the most important thing to train.

5. Do you play Dribble Across a Square all the time? This is important – play the beginning as a warm-up — twice with 10 squares wide and then twice with 14 squares wide.

6. Don’t try to emphasize scoring yet, other than playing the Dribble Around Cone & Pass Relay Race — tell your scorers to try to score and teach them to look for rebounds and be aggressive. Tell the defenders to hit straight forward and teach the Players to Win the Ball and give them a patch if they do.

7. Do you have sports drinks and water at the game? If not, give it a try — it might make a difference (there’s a good article about Hydration on Premium)

8. Play Shoulder and Power Wrestling at Soccer Games to motivate your players.

9. About equal playing time: Most leagues require each player to play 50% of the games – check to see what your league requires. If a player can’t try or run or do what you’re asking, don’t expect them to play like someone who does – I think that’s a good approach. You have a responsibility to the players, and to the Team.

10. Have you taught the Third Law of Coaching? Two goals per game is required for U-9

11. Have you trained the First Defender / Second Defender? How to train is on Quick Team Improvement.

12. I suggest you make a HUGE FRIENDSHIP PATCH and give a Red patch to it and ONLY to it — a BRAVERY patch (also called a Blood Patch) — believe me, it works — I used it myself.

13. You are right – you MUST have strong players at Fullback and Stopper — that is CRITICAL. If you are a Deep Defender you don’t have to be smart or fast, but you MUST be brave.

14. If you defend too much (if you leave your fullbacks deep), consider letting your strong fullbacks play most or all of the game (perhaps rotating three players in the two positions).

15. Try to Win the 50/50 Ball Game is a task to teach the defenders to attack if they cannot win the ball.

I think you are closer than you think. The key is to encourage your players to play hard. Don’t judge your progress with an 8-0 loss – that loss is understandable – it was like a landslide, once it started you couldn’t stop it – it was better to just try not to get hurt by it. .
