The Carrot Porridge Story
Carrots are one of the vegetables that can be called natural vegetables. If one tries the carrot can be grown in any part of the world. There are many people who only use it with difficulty because they do not know how to add it to the food without just using it raw or boiled. This colorful vegetable contains sugar, and can be used as a condiment, a staple food and recently available as corn.
I recently discovered through a problem given to my home economics students that carrots can be added to the breakfast menu. Because many of the students come from low-income backgrounds it was difficult to see inexpensive recipes that we could come up with using carrots to make healthy meals. We have come up with several different recipes. We had decided in one 8th grade class to start using carrots in a drink and the students were asked to bring in the ingredients. But for some reason, four weeks passed and only one girl brought nutmeg and vanilla.
Wanting to stab them in the mind, I said “let’s make carrot paste, you class give other things like milk sugar and flour and I’ll give you a carrot.” This led to several expletives from the students. A guy said that I don’t want to take poison. Someone said, “I’m sick”. Someone said “carrots don’t make porridge”. I said “let’s try it, that’s the only way we’ll know” He bought those things and we continued to cook the porridge.
Students were divided into groups and each group was given a specific task. We started by washing and peeling our carrot. Then blended in water and put it to boil. We then thicken this with flour, added milk, vanilla and spices. We sweeten and let it stand.
After 20 minutes it was ready to taste. A girl tasted it first, she said “teachers sell, they taste good”. Soon others were rushing to taste it. We removed the porridge from the fire and each student got a cup. They were so excited that they rushed to give the teacher and other students a taste. Soon other teachers, security staff, canteen and tuck shop vendors almost every employee was asking for the recipe for carrot paste. If you want to download it follow the link.
