Am I Lazy?
Why is there an increase in obesity because older people today are lazy? Are we all a bunch of drunken potatoes who do nothing but sit and eat all the time? I say no. Rather we are a product of our changing, professional society. I am not saying that we can blame technology, but I am saying that like our youth, adults are also a reflection of the people around them. It’s not an excuse, but an idea.
I came to the heart of my day. When I wake up in the morning, I don’t hear loud noises, noises, or the sound of the radio. These alarms would get my blood pumping from the start, but I would just go to sleep to stop the madness. Then when it happens again, and again, snooze bar. After a few of these I was now late for work, rushing to shower if I had time, rushing to the car, and rushing to work. Not in today’s world. Instead, I wake up to the sound of the ocean on my Homedics radio and slowly wake up in peace. No blood pumping, no increased heart rate. I have a good wake up call and a slow, easy wake up call. Then I go to the shower where I turn on my shower CD player and listen to something I enjoy while I take the time to let the water cool off.
During the toweling and dressing in the morning, I can hear my coffee being made on the coffee machine that makes me a cup every morning without doing anything, except pushing a few buttons I bought.
As I sip my coffee and contemplate the day ahead, I realize it’s almost over, so I push the button on my key that starts my car and warms me up before I get there. . I can walk to my car comfortably, get in, and have a nice, peaceful drive to work (barring the unexpected road rage). It’s not like I used to have to run to my car because I’m often late because I’m mad at my alarm or run because it’s cold and then I get in and shake and shiver for 10 minutes until it warms up.
When I work I find myself pulling out my PDA and looking at what I have planned for the day. No, I will never look at the pages of my pocket calendar or schedule again. My work day is simple and unchanging, but instead of running back and forth across the office to get messages to everyone, I can now send an interoffice email with the click of a button. When it was time to leave, I started my car again from my office and returned home.
When I got home, I put dinner in the microwave that doesn’t need to be cut, chopped, stirred, mixed, scraped, wiped, or even shaken. Push a few buttons and five minutes later I’m sitting in front of the TV watching the shows I recorded on my cable digital recorder and eating my five-minute meal. Could I have done this before? The answer is no, because I would have to make physical food, and there would be nothing on TV to watch, so I would eat and go to work in the yard, clean the house, play with the kids. everything, something else time consuming. Well, while I was eating I found some crumbs on the floor and then I dropped some and went back to the kitchen. Well, I just push a button on my robot vacuum cleaner and let it clean the floor as planned.
Finally, my day is coming to an end and instead of doing something stimulating before going to bed, I can’t resist the opportunity to browse the internet for a little while, maybe chat with friends or family, and check my email. . After all, I need to connect my PDA to the computer. Now my lazy, or rather, technically inactive day is over.
This whole story brings me back to my question that started it all. Am I lazy, or a product of my own creation? It is the opinion of this writer that I am both. Years ago, even simple things like making dinner would be a workout, but now it’s easy because it happens in a box. Everything today is easy and most adults are on the heavy side, because the things you have to do today don’t need a lot of energy. This doesn’t mean that we in society are lazy, it means that we don’t have to push ourselves to complete the daily activities that are needed to get through the day. However, I can stop by the gym on the way home, or go for a walk after dinner, so I’m lazy too. The internet keeps me hooked night after night and I can’t seem to do anything else after dinner. Shame on technology for holding a gun to my head!
