5 Top Gift Ideas For Your Peru Vacation

Many people who travel to Peru probably want to buy gifts to take back home to remind them of their vacation in Peru. I’ve put together a short list of five (and expensive) gift ideas that you might want to consider.

You will see when you arrive in the city of Cusco on your way to Machu Picchu that you will be surprised by the street vendors trying to sell you all kinds of things. You’ll soon learn to say ‘no gracias’ as you walk along the cobbled streets of the historic area, locals approaching you trying to sell you everything from finger puppets to giant alpaca rugs.

Most of the products you’ll see filling the shops around the Plaza de Armas are mass-produced goods, some made in Peru but most imported from Bolivia where factories produce many products for the tourist market.

Most of the items on offer are cheap and affordable, but there are some bargains to be had, and taking your time to look around can give you a great gift that you’ll enjoy for years to come.

From those who live in Cusco, here are my top five tips for the perfect gift for your Peru vacation.

1) Baby Alpaca Clothes

Alpaca wool is used extensively in Peru to make high quality clothing, and was used extensively in the US and Europe before wool was invented. Near the colonial center of Cusco you will find many luxury shops selling Alpaca clothing. Stores like Kuna, Sol Alpaca, Galaria Latina and Alpaca Treasure are real alpaca sellers. Baby Alpaca is the softest of the materials available and is superior to traditional alpaca materials. Although some clothes are expensive, small items like gloves and scarves are cheap (US$20 – 30) and make great gifts. Avoid high street stalls and small shops as they may be happy to claim that the products are alpaca (even with the tags) when they are very different.

2) Peruvian handmade jewelry

Jewelry is another item that you will see being sold on almost every street in Cusco. The quality of products can vary greatly, and it is often difficult to decide whether the price they are trying to charge is fair, or high. So where do you go for good jewelry that you know won’t turn green once you get home? I recommend you check out Ilaria, an Italian jewelry shop that only makes silver jewelry. All the jewelry that is sold is handmade in Peru at the Ilaria factory in Lima, and each piece is unique. Although the store sells more expensive items such as large glasses and candle holders etc. there are also great small options, such as rings, earrings and beautiful bracelets. I’ve picked up some great jewelry there from about US$30 – 50. Handmade in Peru by an Italian artist – how cool would that be! A supermarket is easily found in the main square of Cusco or in LarcoMar in Lima.

3) Unique Peruvian Handmade Ceramics

In Urubamba in the Sacred Valley is the business of the Seminario family, a Peruvian pottery company that produces handmade products and paintings. Owner Pablo and his wife have together created beautiful pieces of unique pottery for the Peruvian tourist market for years, and are now world famous exporting their brightly colored products all over the world. In the main square of Cusco you can go to their shopping center (next to Peru Rail and McDonalds) where you can look at many beautiful things for sale. Small gifts do not exceed US$ 15 – 20 and include mugs, plates, picture frames, trays and jars etc. perhaps the best fruit bowl.

4) Weaving of Ayacucho

Different regions of Peru do different things! Ayacucho is known for its style of handmade products that can make great gifts. Although it is not easy to find among the mountains of other things woven in the streets of Cusco, it is better to look around. Ayacucho textiles are often woven from alpaca and common sheep wool, and are brightly colored with materials that are proud of their support properties. A cushion cover will set you back US$ 50 – 75, but something as small as a small wallet can be bought for US$ 10 – 15. One of the best shops in Cusco that sells these products can be found inside – a square like place the famous Cicciolina restaurant. When you enter the square from the head of Calle Triunfo go to the right corner.

5) Pisco

The last gift idea for the holidays in Peru is something you may not have heard of! Peru, especially the regions of Lima, Ica, Pisco and Arequipa are known for a type of white brandy – called Pisco. Not available in North America or Europe, this strong drink is a great gift that can be easily found in any store for US$15 a bottle. Impress your friends with a small house Pisco Sour, or mix it with a tin of peaches in syrup for a sweet and savory party drink.

I hope you like my other gifts. If you have an idea that you think is good please let me know! I am always open to good ideas and suggestions.
