Maria Montessori, a Woman Ahead of Her Time

Born in Chiaravalle, Italy, in 1870, Maria Montessori showed a strong personality in her childhood. When he was young, he wanted to be an engineer and attended an all-boys technical school, despite his father’s disapproval. He went to the University of Rome, studying medicine. Clearly ahead of her time, she was the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome La Sapienza Medical School and in 1896 became the first female doctor in Italy.

As a member of the University of Rome’s Psychiatric Clinic, Montessori went on to work in psychiatry, education and anthropology. He developed an interest in the treatment and education of children with special needs and mental disorders. He was appointed by the Italian Minister of Education to head the Scuola Ortofrenica, an institution dedicated to children with mental retardation. When he tested his educational ideas, the children he supervised improved significantly in terms of reading and writing, and even beyond normal achievement.

Soon Montessori was asked to lead a school in the construction of houses for the poor in Rome. Opened in January 1907, the Casa dei Bambini, or Children’s House, became a turning point in Maria’s career. Maria focused on creating an environment where children could learn and develop at their own pace, a principle Montessori called “spontaneous pride.” The teacher’s role in the classroom changed dramatically to find the potential of each individual child and follow the child’s guidance in learning. Word of children’s ability to absorb information and focus on learning soon spread throughout the world, and the Casa dei Bambini became the foundation of what is now known as the Montessori Method.

The impressive results of the natural learning method established by Montessori soon led to fame and invitations to travel. Dr. Montessori visited the United States for the first time in 1913. She had powerful supporters in America including Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison and Helen Keller. In 1915, he spoke at Carnegie Hall and was invited to the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, where he set up a glass-enclosed classroom for four months. Spectators were invited to see 21 children in the classroom, all of whom were new to the Montessori method. The exhibition won two gold medals for education and the world’s attention now focused on Montessori’s visionary method of developing the child’s natural abilities.

Dr. Montessori began to conduct teacher trainings and speak to well-known organizations around the world. Groups were created to promote his methods. He was invited to open a research institute in Spain in 1917. In 1919, he began teaching academic courses in London. Although he was highly respected in Italy, he was forced to leave in 1934 because of his opposition to Mussolini’s regime. After going to Spain, he stayed in the Netherlands and continued to stay in India in 1939, when he was invited by the Theosophical Society of India. Despite being confined to India due to the war, Montessori continued to develop several courses and create a solid foundation for the Montessori method in India. His son Mario, who was born in 1898, helped him organize and conduct these classes in India.

In his later years, Dr. Montessori studied in Pakistan, London and the Netherlands. Montessori traveled the world for more than 40 years, introducing, teaching, writing and promoting her learning methods.

He was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize. He moved to the Netherlands in 1949 and spent the rest of his life there, dying in Noordwijk aan Zee in 1952.

Dr. Montessori leaves behind not only a special group of research and observation of children and their abilities to grow and learn, but also an educational system that promotes the child’s freedom to be stable, creative and rational while developing intellectually. and thoughts. Her lifelong work in the study of child development and education is still recognized around the world, many organizations promote her methods and Montessori schools are common in the United States and many other countries.

On January 6, 2007, the great mother Maria Montessori spoke through David C. Lewis to spiritual seekers about the education of seventh grade children:

As I contemplated all that was inspired to me in the way of realizing how the inner truths of life can be brought forth in a more orderly way through things and nature that allow the inner creativity and creativity of the child-man. -be/daughter-expand [to blossom, I saw the] the miracle that through guided instruction is given naturally to that child, the practice of Christianity [that one’s] His spirit can relate to what [her] The Supreme Owner will give birth. Therefore, blessed ones, it is not a lot of teaching or the distribution of wisdom, but the natural unfolding of innate wisdom from within the person whose teacher is his servant.

Each of you can take the principles that I had the opportunity to incorporate into the so-called Montessori method and use them in other areas of your business life, in business and even in the planning of your Hearts and setting up your communities. For these principles are universal and when properly received and understood will allow the flower gift of virtue and the Buddhist path to emerge in all that you do, all that you see, blessed ones.
