Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee – The Best Coffee in the World?
Before exploring the history of Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee, we need to review the main types of coffee, which are mainly the Robusta or Arabica varieties. The difference comes from the type of coffee. Robusta coffee is easier to grow — and more productive than Arabica coffee — but less flavorful and more consistent. Therefore, Robusta coffee is very cheap. Most of the national coffee brands available through wholesalers and supermarkets are Robusta coffee. On the other hand, Arabica coffee is well known for its consistent quality, strong taste, and strong aroma. Premium coffees that are marketed as single-breed coffees – Kenyan, Costa Rican, Sumatran, for example – are almost all Arabica varieties. Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is an Arabica coffee.
Coffee found its way to Jamaica in 1728 when Sir Nicholas Lawes, Governor of Jamaica, imported Arabica seedlings from the island of Martinique. The new building was organic and coffee production was expanded. Unfortunately, Jamaica’s coffee production also originated – like other plantation crops – with abhorrent slavery.
This amazing coffee is grown in the beautiful Blue Mountains of Jamaica which reach about 7,402 meters at their highest point. The Blue Mountains dominate the eastern third of Jamaica, located between Kingston in the south and Port Maria in the north. The upper parts of the mountains are kept as forests while the lower parts of the mountains are given over to coffee production. The wonderful combination of rich soil, cool climate, high rainfall and good drainage produces high quality coffee. The fog is believed to slow down the growth of the coffee beans, thus producing more (and tastier) beans.
Only the coffee grown in these mountains is allowed to have the Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee, which is an internationally protected trademark under the authority of the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board. Coffee grown at elevations between 3,000 and 5,500 feet is known as Jamaica Blue Mountain. Coffee grown at elevations between 1,500 and 3,000 feet (910 m) is called Jamaica High Mountain, and coffee grown below 1,500-foot (460 m) elevation is called Jamaica Supreme or Jamaica Low Mountain.
Following the recent escalation of hostilities that destroyed the good reputation of Jamaican coffee, the British colonial government established the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board in 1950 to preserve and promote Jamaican coffee consistently throughout the world. After gaining independence, the new Jamaican government continued to sell coffee. Jamaican coffee is selected and inspected at each stage of pulling, drying, polishing, sorting and packaging according to the Board’s regulations. All Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is ground coffee. Everything that is imported is a “good cup” tested by the staff of the Coffee Industry Board. All shipments of Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee must be approved and certified by the Board
What should one expect from a cup of Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee? Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is known for its sweet, rich taste and lack of bitterness. It is generally considered to be the best and most complete cup of coffee. Combined with its refined taste, its strong aroma adds to its appeal as the most successful coffee in the world. Some critics say that increased production – encouraged by foreign investors – has made Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee better than other Caribbean coffees. However, after two hundred years of production, its popularity and value are still maintained by coffee lovers around the world.
The only way to know if Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is worth the extra cost, which is often three to four times more expensive than other premium coffees, is to try it for yourself. Perhaps, an obscure idea or idea for your next birthday or holiday gift will give you a chance.
