Shocking But True! "Goat Scrotum Ale" Is the World’s Most Popular Home Brewed Beer

If your favorite beer comes from a local brewery, you probably haven’t had much fun drinking your own home brewed beer.

Sure, the commercial stuff is fine. But if you want the satisfaction of drinking your own delicious beer, you’ll want to try the world’s most famous homebrew, Goat Scrotum Ale.

Goat Scrotum sounds disgusting, doesn’t it? The truth is that it is a beer that everyone enjoys. One of the reasons why it is so popular is that it can be cooked in a variety of ways and deliciously. If you like chocolate, you can make it like dark chocolate. You may prefer a fruity gingerry ale, with a hint of spice or a smooth, aromatic beer. There are hundreds of combinations possible and creating your own colors is a lot of fun.

Goat Scrotum Ale became popular in the early 1800s when it was known as “Tumultuous Porter”. The hearty ale continued to be a favorite among beer drinkers until prohibition came and the beer and its recipes disappeared. Luckily for us, the recipe was brought back to the appreciative world of homebrewing by a researcher named Charles Papazian.

Making Papazian’s Goat Scrotum Ale was fun, to say the least! Here are the ingredients for Papzian:

5 lbs dark malt extract

1 lb crystal malt

1/4 lb each black patent malt and crushed roasted barley

3 1/2 oz Hallertauer leaf hops

1 cup each brown sugar and blackstrap molasses

1 lb corn syrup

2 tsp gypsum

1 tsp Irish Moss

1 pkg of yeast

3/4 cup of corn sugar to start the bottle

To customize your ales and create your own unique drinks you can use these ingredients for any ingredients you want:

2 to 4 oz fresh grated ginger root

Up to 2 inches of licorice

2 spoons of spruce wood

1 to 10 dry chilies

1/4 cup lightly crushed juniper berries

6 oz unsweetened Bakers chocolate or cocoa powder

Here are Mr. Papzian’s moves:

Soak the crystal salt in the brewing water for one hour at 150 F. Remove the remaining crystal malt and mix it with black malt, brown sugar, blackstrap molasses and a pound of corn sugar.

Bring to a gentle boil until all ingredients are completely dissolved. Add a quarter of the hops and any ingredients you choose to use. Boil for fifteen minutes. Next, add half an ounce of hops and cook for fifteen minutes.

Toss in black patent malt and crushed roasted barley. Boil another one

fifteen minutes. Add another quarter hop along with gypsum and Irish Moss. Boil for thirteen minutes. Now stir in the remaining hops and half the hops, boil for two minutes.

Allow the wort to cool to room temperature. Be careful when transferring the liquid into the fermenter. When the wort temperature drops below 80F, stir in the yeast.

And finally, when the wort has finished fermenting, add three-quarters of a cup of corn sugar.

You are now ready to bottle your delicious creation and look forward to that delightful first sip.
