Who’s the Toughest Team in the Atlantic? Part 1

With the Devils and Penguins leading the Division with 28 points, the Flyers, Rangers and Islanders are all tied with 23. While it is being said that the entire division is divided by only five points.

Although we are almost at the end of the NHL season, if it ended today the whole division could make a playoff game together with the leader of the North East Division Buffalo Sabers and the South East Divisions Washington Capitals.

The Devils are on their game and proved to be a tuff road team with a 9-1 record away from home led by Z. Parise with 24 points and legend M. Brodeur between the pipes holding down a 12-5 record. with a 2.21 Goals Against Average. With Parise and Brodeur at their best and their great history you can see why they are tied at the top of the Atlantic with the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Stanley Cup champions continued where they left off when they won last season with a 9-1 record. They lost E. Malkin for a couple of games and hit a skid but got back on the winning track again in the streak winning their last two games and maintaining the top spot with the Devils with a 14-7 record.

The Philadelphia Flyers stand at 11-5-1 and were the first team to hand the New Jersey Devils their first loss of the season. The Flyers also have a game in hand on every team in the division with two games in hand on the Devils and four games in hand on the Penguins, Rangers and Islanders. The Flyers are led by one of the best defensemen in the league Chris Pronger. Jeff Carter leads the team in scoring with 19 points while Pronger and Mike Richards both have 17.

The Rangers who started the season hot at 7-1 have gone cold since then. Even though the Rangers have been losing their games recently they have had it all. Led by M. Gaborik with 27 points, they are currently in second place in the league leading with 15 goals and 12 assists. If the Rangers can get all their guys going and stay healthy they will be dangerous too.

The surprise of these episodes has fans on Long Island excited once again. At the start of the season they did not win but they managed to get points in the games they lost after a while. The Islanders started their season 1-4-5 getting their first win of the season against the Carolina Hurricanes in a shootout and finally got their first win of the season against the NY Rangers and went 7-2-2. since that victory. The Islanders are getting the job done with their young explosion of John Tavares number one overall pick in the 2009 draft with M. Moulson and K. Okposo connecting. Goalie D. Roloson has been rocking between the pipes of late and has a 6-1 record in goal with a 2.77 GAA. The team will regain leadership when the two meet again and the Islanders should be fine.

In short, the division may end, but at the moment the Penguins, Flyers and Devils seem to be the most successful. With the Rangers and Islanders right there this will be an interesting rivalry to watch. It’s hard to pick one but you can’t deny the defending champs a credit.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of this story as we approach mid-season in early January 2010.
