What’s Next in the World of NASCAR

Next week, the NASCAR Nextel Cup teams head west to California’s golden state to race in the Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway. Infineon Raceway is one of two NASCAR Nextel Cup road courses that help add another dimension to an already challenging schedule. NASCAR is the only American sports series that offers speedway, short track, and road racing.

The grueling 1.99 mile course at Infineon is a challenge for drivers and cars alike. This song offers 12 versions and different variations. In many cases, even the most experienced drivers face problems due to transmission or mechanical failure. Expect to see drivers lose gears as they go up and down moving their 3000lb, 850 horsepower rockets around the track.

Next week at Infineon, expect Jeff Gordon & Tony Stewart to battle it out. Among the current drivers, both Gordon and Stewart are in the top 5 for career finishes in road events.

If you are a gambling junkie, I have some advice for you! Bet on Kasey Kahne every time he wins the race. In the current era of NASCAR, how often does a polesitter win a race? Not often! Just ask Ryan Newman. However, Kasey Kahne has managed to win several times starting from the pole.

Rain-shortened or not, Kahne had a crash car yesterday in the 3M Performance 400. After starting the race early, Kahne ran into trouble while shooting down lap 51; the pit stop put Kahne down 38th. However, by the age of 90, Kahne had climbed 10 times. In the end, the race was decided on the road as Kasey passed Carl Edwards with a leg to take the win.

Yesterday’s performance is a sign that not only Kasey Kahne has arrived but also Evernham Motorsports. Finally, Evernham Motorsports has a driver in the top 3 who poses a huge threat every week.

Who Is Not?

I hate to pick casualties, but Tony Stewart is being put this week in the Who’s Not section. Through no fault of his own, Tony crashed into the 3rd wall on lap 22 in the final crash. The crash raises some big questions, 1) Did the crash re-inflame Tony’s already injured shoulder 2) is Tony feeling gun shy after having so many crashes in the past few races and 3) is Tony, and his team, confident at the level it needs to be at this point in the season?

With only 10 races remaining in the Nextel Cup Championship, the 6-13 race is on the rise. It is important that the drivers in the top 10 perform consistently. This means that 30+ places will no longer be available for Tony. Since the All-Star break, the Smokes have been slowly sliding down the standings. He is currently in sixth place with 132 miles between him and the 11th place driver, Jeff Gordon.

If Tony doesn’t finish like the old Tony, he might be on the outside looking in as the Nextel Cup Chase for the Championship begins.

Yesterday’s win at Michigan in the 3M Performance 400 proved that Kasey Kahne is the man at the front, and that he is no Wicked Witch of the West. As everyone ran for cover as the last of the rain started, Kasey happily walked down the hole soaking up every last drop. For Kasey, after I beat Carl Edwards slowly off the road, I’m sure the rain felt like sunshine on a good day.

Yesterday was also a strong day for two drivers looking to qualify for the Chase for the Championship, Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards. Both finished in the top 5 pushing Greg Biffle into the top 10, with Carl within 85 points of the top 10.

Another big mover that day was Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr had one of the strongest cars in the race, and at times he was very strong. In the end, Earnhardt finished 3rd and moved up to 4th place in the points.

Jeff Gordon increased his chances of qualifying for the Chase for the Championship by finishing in the top 10 and reaching 11 points out of ten places. Expect Jeff to continue to increase his chances of making the top 10 with a strong finish at Infineon Raceway next week.
