ICC World Cup 2011: How Bangladesh Can Win
Author’s Note: If you were to ask a Bangladeshi fan if his team could win the World Cup, this is probably what he would say.
If you are laughing my head off, you couldn’t stop laughing on April 2, 2011 because Bangladesh has won the World Cup of Death.
Did anyone expect Sri Lanka to win in 1996? If you had predicted that Sri Lanka would win, before the tournament, many people would have laughed at you.
Did you expect Bangladesh to beat India in 2007? If you had predicted that India would lose to Bangladesh in the Cup edition, many people would have laughed at you.
So go ahead and prove to you how Bangladesh can win and win this World Cup. Shakib Hassan’s team will have to compete against India, West Indies, South Africa and England to enter the quarter finals.
We will win at least two matches and finish third in the group, behind South Africa and India, in first and second place. I think we will easily beat Ireland and the Netherlands, the other two teams in our group.
So we finish third in the group. We expect to meet Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals, as they are expected to finish last in Group A, while Australia should finish first. We are confident of sending Sri Lanka for many reasons: (a) our captain Shakib Hasan is more promising than Sangakkara, (b) Sri Lanka’s bowling has lost its chances in the absence of Vaas and the decline of Murali, and our main batting line- in Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, etc., will be able to play their ball more easily.
In the semi-final we hope to meet South Africa. We will win the match on the basis of: (a) familiarity with wickets in the subcontinent and (b) South Africa’s tendency to choke.
Please consider the following strengths of our team: (1) International opener Tamim Iqbal, (2) International bowler Shakib Hasan, (3) New bowler Mortaza.
In the final, we will wait for India, who are expected to meet and beat Pakistan in the quarter-finals and Australia in the semi-finals. And we will be very happy to beat India in the final and we will be supported by:
(a) the pressure of optimism in India will be great,
(b) India have won their last two matches in a row at the Wankhede Stadium, and the rule of majority will go against them,
(c) Bangladesh beat India in the 2007 World Cup and we will continue the tradition,
(d) Indian bowlers are prone to injuries and I feel that Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra will not be in the final.
Long live Bangladesh — ICC World Cup 2011 Champions!
