Australia Vs Zimbabwe Cricket World Cup 2011
The first meeting of the defending champions in Australia further confirms this fact that the minnows are the world’s most famous tournament like the ICC Cricket World Cup. After Bangladesh, Kenya and Canada, it was now Zimbabwe’s turn to be embarrassed in front of top teams like Australia.
However, it was not a one-sided game in the first half. The Zimbabwean bowlers maintained a good line and length and restricted Australia to just 262 runs. A trick to create a threat by left-handed pitcher Ray Price proved to be very beneficial for the home team. It also proves that the Australian batting line-up is struggling in the changing environment of the subcontinent.
Apart from Shane Watson and Michael Clarke none of the Australian batsmen looked comfortable in front of the Zimbabwean bowlers. The run was also marred by the fact that most batsmen’s strike rates are surprisingly low. However, it was Shane Watson who played 79 runs from 92 balls and was instrumental in helping the team reach 250. He was well supported by Clarke, who also showed his offensive skills and played 58 runs against just 55 runs.
Coming to bat, it doesn’t look like Zimbabwe will be able to achieve what they want. The dynamic attack of Brett Lee, Shaun Tait and Mitchell Johnson is perhaps the best of the Zimbabwean batsmen. Although, the opener Charles Coventry gave the impression to dominate the Australian bowling line-up, but he fell short in the same way.
Johnson bowled 9.2 overs and took four crucial wickets at an economy rate of just 2.03. Tait and Jason Krejza shared two wickets each as Lee took Coventry’s vitals. The bowling performance of the World Champions did not change anything for Australia’s victory. Zimbabwe got all out by scoring 171 in 46.2 overs.
Shane Watson was declared “Player of the Match” for his maturity. While many of his teammates were unable to cope with the slow pace of the Ahmedabad Motor Stadium, it was Watson who stood to the fore and managed the innings brilliantly. The innings had four fours and a six with an average strike rate of 85.86.
Frankly, it didn’t look like Zimbabwe could do anything about the outcome of the match. They have been successful in every aspect of the game, which also confirms the difference in the quality of the two teams. However, it will be interesting to see how Zimbabwe fares in their upcoming match against Canada on 28 February in Nagpur. On the other hand, the Australians all have to take on the challenge of their opponents at the aforementioned venue on 25 February.
