ICC World Cup 2011 Semi-Finals: Probable Pakistan Team Against India
Mohali is expected to host the second semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2011, between India and Pakistan. Only one match was played here in the biggest competition this year, when South Africa faced Holland, in the B league.
The match started at a lull and the Dutch players bought in as the Proteas slipped to 58/2 in the 16th over. The wicket began to dwindle as the game wore on, and Smith’s wards amassed 351/5, behind separate hundreds by Amla and De Villiers.
Interestingly, the spinners came into play as Holland chased down the lights and Imran Tahir took 3 wickets and Peterson 2, as Holland fell to 120 after being dismissed.
Of course, the spinners are the key, and Pakistan should take this into account while selecting the team. Some of the fastest players are Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz and Shoaib Akhtar. Razzaq is also the seam that Afridi can bounce back from. As Umar Gul excelled, Razzaq joined in from time to time. Riaz was unimpressed, while Akhtar seems to have lost his cool, after his hammering against New Zealand.
Pakistan has three front spinners, in Afridi, Rehman and Ajmal. Hafeez is number four, and Afridi considers the opening batsman the best player in his team. Hafeez justified his captain’s faith in him, with a spell of 2/16 against West Indies in the quarter-finals. He followed it up with an unbeaten 61, in his side’s best chase.
The following players have selected themselves: Mohd Hafeez, Kamran Akmal, Asad Shafiq, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq, Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal.
This leaves only one player to be selected, between Abdul Rehman and Wahab Riaz. Riaz took 0/29 off 6 overs against the Caribbeans. He got 4 wickets from 3 matches earlier in the tournament; In all, in ODIs, Riaz has taken 26 wickets in 17 matches and has a strike rate of over 5 per over.
There is no significant difference in the success achieved by Riaz and Rehman; the latter played 5 of his team’s 6 matches and took 3 wickets. Rehman’s ODI career in 20 matches has produced 15 wickets; where he scores against Riaz is his average, which is 4.31 overall and 4.42 in the world cup. But his world cup average of 66.3 per wicket stands in stark contrast to Riaz’s average of 37.33.
Pakistan will be looking for wickets instead of countering India’s batting power, and Rehman’s demand for ground is diminishing. Additionally, Riaz, with his left-arm medium fast, offers the team variety in his bowling arsenal.
