10 Fun Facts About the Little City Known As Palmerston North in New Zealand’s North Island
After spending 3 years in New Zealand in Palmerston North, I have seen few things, supported by facts and evidence. The city isn’t too bad to live in, except that it’s very small and boring.
Here are 10 interesting facts:
10) There is a Sakura Festival held at the International Pacific College campus every year, usually on the third Saturday in September (spring starts in September). It’s a celebration of colors and cultures – many Japanese students wear their Kimono, as well as Asian styles.
9) Palmerston North is known as the ‘Student City’ because more than half of the city’s population is under the age of 33. A large part is made up of students from Massey University, Universal College of Learning and International Pacific College.
8 ) Locals and students refer to Palmerston North as Palmy. The name is full of mouthfuls and Palmy probably sounds very romantic. Although we find it boring and sometimes, we all miss it when we leave.
7) The shape of the city looks best like this grid, with a square in the middle. And aptly named The Square, the 7-ha park with I-Site is the name of the town surrounded by lawns, gardens, trees and fountains.
6) The mall in Palmerston North is called The Plaza. There is only one cinema (multiple theaters) in this city. Fortunately, there are good shops near the mall.
5) There are only 12 routes in Palmerston North. Frequency about once every 30-60 minutes. Six of these buses go to Massey University via different routes. Good news – students ride for free.
4) At the landfill site there is a mountain of rubbish called ‘Mt Cleese’. John Cleese described Palmerston North as the “suicide capital of New Zealand” and said “if you want to kill yourself but don’t have the guts, I think a trip to Palmerston North will do the trick.”
3) Palmerston North International Airport has no international flights. In the past, Freedom Air flew between the cities of Palmy and Australia on the west coast, but it stopped after March 2008.
2) There is a town called Palmerston in the South Island. Therefore, the town is called Palmerston North. It is named in honor of Viscount Palmerston, a former Prime Minister of Great Britain.
1) It may not be the best place in New Zealand, but Palmerston North isn’t too bad. It is 2.5 hours north of Wellington, 8 hours south of Auckland, 30 minutes east of the west coast and 45 minutes west of the Ruahine and Tararua Ranges (and the largest wind farm in the southern hemisphere).
This is a place that the traveler tends to skip or miss because it is not along the main roads. In fact, most people won’t know where it is unless you live there or have been there at some point.
If you go to any of the top schools in Palmerston North, you will have a relaxed school life there. The school rush is less, and there is always time for everything.
