The Truth About the History of Softball
Softball history. Have you ever wondered where it all started?
I tell you that softball came from Chicago, on Thanksgiving Day, 1887. After a group of about twenty boys gathered in a boat, to hear the results of a ball game. After the winner was announced, a man picked up a boxing glove that had been left aside and threw it at someone…who hit it with a pole.
A man named George Hancock is known in softball history as the man who shouted, “Let’s play ball!” He tied a boxing glove into a ball, pulled out a diamond from the floor and found a broom handle to use as a bat.
This is how the idea of a softball game was born. Now, how did this curve ball develop into the sport it is today?
George Hancock, the man who almost single-handedly invented the game of softball, invented a larger ball and a smaller bat with a rubber tip on the end. He also went ahead and drew permanent white lines on the floor of the gym and wrote new rules for what he called “indoor baseball”.
Indoor baseball quickly spread throughout the world. Many played to stay active in the winter months, a great way to play outside in the freezing snow! As the weather warmed, the game was moved outside and the new name “indoor-outdoor” was given to the game. The game became very popular and Hancock published the indoor-outdoor rules in 1889.
Another important event in softball history was when games were shortened to one hour, cutting the innings down to seven. This happened because the firefighters decided to change the game so that their fellow firefighters are busy between calls.
The game was named “softball” in 1926, after the director of the Denver YMCA said so. In 1933, softball was introduced to the world as it traveled with the world’s fair.
The most important year in the history of softball was 1933. This is when the Amateur Softball Association was founded. The agreement introduced more standardized rules for the game, including rules for different age groups, ball sizes and pitch sizes.
In 1939, softball was introduced to Australia and Canadians introduced softball to the Netherlands after World War II. Later in 1962, softball was introduced to the United Kingdom, the first British women’s softball league was established in 1983.
The first international women’s championship in softball history was played in 1965 in Melbourne, Australia. The first men’s international championship in softball history was played in 1966 in Mexico City. Since 1970, the world championships for softball have been played every four years and in 1996, women’s softball became an Olympic medal.
Today, millions of people in the United States, and all over the world play softball…myself included!
