The Nominations For the ICC Cricketer of the Year
Reading the long list of nominees for the seventh ICC Cricketer of the Year Award I can’t help but raise an eyebrow at some of the dubious, and obvious, things done by the so-called ‘experts’ in the selection process.
In total the following 16 players have been nominated for their ‘achievements’ in cricket between 24 August 2009 and 10 August 2010:
Hashim Amla
Doug Bollinger
Michael Clarke
MS Dhoni
Ryan Harris
Mitchell Johnson
Jacques Kallis
Morne Morkel
Ricky Ponting
Kumar Sangakkara
Virender Sehwag
Dale Steyn
Sachin Tendulkar
Daniel Vettori
AB de Villiers
Shane Watson
What you will immediately notice about this list is that a) 6 Australians appear on it and b) there are no English players. In the period when England beat Australia in the Ashes, did well in South Africa and are currently winning 6 Tests in a row I find it amazing. Especially when you consider that Australia lost the series to England and drew one against Pakistan.
Looking at the players I also find amazing and that’s why some of them are there. Remembering the Cricketer of the Year Award takes into account his performance in test matches, ODI and cricket 20/20 why Ryan Harris with his 53 wickets in 21 matches – especially against a bad Pakistan team – and Dale Steyn with 65 wickets in 29 matches in the series and not Broad (78 in 37 games) Anderson (76 in 31), most against South Africa and Australia, or Mohammed Amir who is 18 years young has collected 65 victims in only 29 games especially against Australia. and England? Likewise how come Daniel Vettori made the list with 1151 runs and 64 wickets and not Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan whose 64 wickets and 1103 runs were all scored against the top opposition. And why AB de Villiers’ 1746 runs in 41 innings is considered worthy of including Jayawardene’s 1836 in the same amount of knocks (with the weight of captaincy on his shoulders), or Dilshan’s 1926 in 48 innings. The most surprising of all, is Graeme Swann’s exception. With 93 wickets, most of which were against Australia and South Africa, and ranked 3rd in the world what else did he have to do to qualify for the list other than being born in Australia?
In case you were wondering the long list was made by a five-member panel selected by Clive Lloyd, chairman of the ICC cricket committee and including former international players Angus Fraser, Matthew Hayden, Ravi Shastri and Duncan Fletcher and the award ceremony will be held. held in Bangalore on October 6. For that record I think Shane Watson is the highest scorer at that time with 2497 runs and 79 wickets at 22.64 SHOULD be the Cricketer of the Year.
Being Australian they probably will.
