How Man United Won The English Premiership Title
So Man United could not complete the Double by losing 0 – 1 to their hated rivals Chelsea in the FA Cup Final. But I’m guessing nobody in the United camp is complaining because they won the Premier League title for the first time since 2003 – by knocking out two Chelsea champions.
“It was a difficult task because of the amount of money Chelsea have,” Sir Alex Ferguson said of his ninth Premier League title. “They were also the toughest opponents we faced.” Indeed, humble words for a man who has now won 20 major trophies in his 20 years at Old Trafford.
Even at 65 years old, it’s hard to shake Fergie’s playful and friendly spirit. Anyway, for posterity’s sake, here’s the horror story of how the mighty Reds won the title in the 2006 – 2007 season:
1) August 2006
Football pundits have predicted that after selling top goalscorer Ruud van Nistelrooy to Spanish giants Real Madrid, Man United will lose their attacking talent. Against the odds, at the end of August, the fortunes of the Reds read: 3 wins out of 3 played with 10 goals. On the other hand, Chelsea lost 1 – 2 which lost to Middlesbrough in their second football match.
2) September 2006
The good times never end. Arsenal stole the thunder by beating Man United 1 – 0 at Old Trafford and ending United’s good start to the season. This saw Chelsea regain top spot but the cracks in their defense were exposed as they were only drawn by another mid-table side, Aston Villa. Meanwhile, perennial champions Liverpool fell to their third successive defeat at Bolton. Things were shaping up for a two-horse race for the Premiership title. September ended with a fine individual goal against Reading and the unstoppable Cristiano Ronaldo.
3) October 2006
In a sensational performance, United star Wayne Rooney hit out at Bolton for a 4 – 0 defeat. This ensured United’s continued lead against Chelsea while Liverpool’s title hopes fell short as they fell 0 – 2 at Old Trafford. Chelsea suffered a major setback when their first-choice striker Petr Cech suffered a fractured skull after a foul on Reading. As he writes this, he wears a reinforced skull cap at a football game because medical experts can’t guarantee that another skull won’t damage the brain.
4) November 2006
In the bitter cold, Man Untied played Chelsea at Old Trafford but had to settle for a 1 – 1 draw. Jubilant, Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho declared that United wasted a “huge chance” to open up a six-point gap at the top. Big words, I’d say. Caution – pride before the fall.
5) December 2006
The full force of the winter season felt like a series of Chelsea players walking away injured. Without the ever-reliable Cech still injured, Chelsea could have secured a narrow game against Reading and Fulham. A dejected Arsenal, meanwhile, recorded their undoing with a one-goal defeat at struggling Sheffield United.
6) January 2007
New Year, the same steady flow for United, as they maintained their six-point advantage at the top. Things took an interesting turn a day after Chelsea lost 0 – 2 to Liverpool, Man United foolishly conceded two late goals to lose 1 – 2 to Arsenal. Chelsea’s injury woes worsened when there were rumors that Mourinho had been robbed of money to bring in a centre-back in the January window.
7) February 2007
Despite lifting the League Cup and boosted by captain John Terry’s return from injury, Chelsea failed to take the lead at Manu United. A raucous United faced Fulham at Craven Cottage but still managed to pick up all the points, thanks to a superb effort from Player of the Year Ronaldo. Undeniable endurance. Man United: Players in the making?
8) March 2007
Man United’s Irish midfielder John O’Shea scored a precious last-minute winner against Liverpool. This victory increased their desire for honor by defeating football’s biggest rival. While Man United faced their own injury problems, Chelsea continued to press and win.
9) April 2007
With two unforced errors from United striker Edwin van der Sar, United conceded 1 – 2 at Portsmouth. On the same day, Chelsea also beat Tottenham 1 – 0 to restore their title challenge…but were relegated at the end of April. Then, United scored four goals in the last half hour to convert a two-goal lead at Everton, while Chelsea only managed to draw at Bolton.
10) May 2007
United needed four points from their last three games to become champions. Ronaldo’s questionable penalty in the Manchester derby cut the target to one place. On 6 May 2007, Arsenal favored United by holding Chelsea 1 – 1. This gave United an unassailable seven-point lead with two games remaining.
And there you have it, Chelsea are failing to do what they love after starting last summer to sign Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack. On the other hand, Man United took the title despite only signing one great player, Michael Carrick. Of course, success does not necessarily go to the super rich.
