2009 ICC World Cricket T20 – England Fail to Meet Balance Between Bat and Ball

As England’s ‘2009 ICC T20 Cricket Tournament’ draws to a close, I’m sure there will be more than a few cricketers who will be assessing their performance in the tournament and especially their team’s performance.

England’s latest defeat seems like a rematch of the previous one, if it didn’t happen. Set 162 runs to win, West Indies must have been too much when the British weather intervened to make a revised total of 80 from 9 overs under the management of Duckworth-Lewis.

While England’s bowlers performed admirably, they fell short as the Windies reached the mark with three balls to spare. With the likes of Gayle, Pollard and Bravo in their team, the destructive batsmen, there was no doubt that all three would fail to put the English bowlers to the sword and with a deep batting quality, the nine over thrash went in favor of the visitors. The Windies at one point reached 45 for 5 with only a few notable batsmen coming in, but still managed to win. So, what can England learn from this defeat and their Championship?

West Indies did well where England failed and it was not on the field, but in team selection. The biggest challenge for a manager of a T20 team has to be finding the right balance between a strong bowling attack and a good batsman who can bat with speed. Let’s face it, the T20 format can sometimes be a lottery, Australia’s early departure in the tournament proves that. Behind every team’s success in whatever type of sport is being played, there must be a formula for creating madness. The craziness with which the England team is selecting, they don’t seem to have learned from the previous games.

In most of their matches England laid a good base from which to build a strong lead against the middle batsmen who were unable to keep a clean sheet.

While it could be argued that Pietersen is the only world-class batsman in the England team, at times Shah, Bopara and Wright have all contributed runs at the level associated with the T20 format. If you look at the breakdowns of other teams, and without a doubt the team that will win the tournament, there is one thing in common….. they all hit deep!

England’s batting line-up in terms of quick-scoring batsmen seems to be failing as the top four departs. Collingwood and Foster, despite being adept at other forms of the game, cannot score at the level they want in T20.

In their loss to the Windies, England’s batsmen failed to break the string from the 11th over until they scored 10 runs from Stuart Broad in the last two balls of the innings. It is good that they will get enough money, but if the middle order batsmen were good at scoring quickly, then the game could be taken away from the Windies.

In their previous match against India it was a similar story, a lack of consistency in the middle led to a very low score. He didn’t do much in the event, but it seems he didn’t learn anything, because he got rid of a regular batsman, when he needed a batsman.

Don’t pick a captain because that is his role in 50 overs, pick a batsman who can bat in his position at T20 level. Similarly, don’t pick a wicketkeeper, no matter how good he is behind the stumps, who won’t drive the ball to the boundary very often.

I believe Matt Prior’s overall skills are suitable for T20, even if he is lazier behind the wicket than Foster. I think most of England’s players know who is missing in the middle, but as ‘Freddie’ Flintoff continues his rehabilitation, there is no need to select the players who are the right players according to the short form of the game, not just. select players who are good in different types of cricket.

If England had picked a team with a strength that moved a bit deeper, they would still be in the competition. Before England worry about the season, they need to look for players who suit the T20 format.
