KooGa Rugby and the History of the Wallabies Rugby Jersey
On Australia Day 2010, KooGa Rugby, supported by Wallabies Matt Giteau, Benn Robinson, and Berrick Barnes, launched their new Wallabies jersey. By doing this KooGa started supporting the history of rugby since 1899 when Australia played their first series in 1899.
In this edition of the jersey, KooGa has retained the traditional Wallabies green and gold, although the green is very limited in this edition. When the Wallabies played in the first series their jersey was either blue or red, and they had a familiar design. After the First World War Queensland retired and Australia was represented by New South Wales in the Tests. When it was re-incorporated in 1929 Australia was represented using its current colours, green and gold.
There have been few steps taken to avoid ethnic conflicts and conflicting groups. For example in 1933 Australia reverted to blue against the Springboks, and white with a bit of green and gold against the All Blacks in 1938.
While the new version of the KooGa rugby jersey is true to the green and gold tradition, which dates back to 1929, that’s where the similarities to the old jerseys end. As the head of the Australian Rugby Union said at the launch, “Obviously, the Wallabies athlete of that time is very different from what we have today with modern clothing, hugging, heat protection, but the Wallaby Gold is consistent.”.
This has become a trend in all rugby playing countries around the world, and the huggable style of rugby jerseys was first shown publicly at the 2003 World Cup. Blacks. They all use their classic colors of white, green, and black respectively, but they’ve all moved away from the baggy, thick cotton and collared jerseys of old.
Technology has continued to improve since the World Cup, which saw rugby jerseys, particularly Adidas’ new All Blacks jerseys, drop. The latest KooGa Rugby unit is described as “‘bulletproof'” and “indestructible”, despite containing materials such as hydrosteel and carbon fibre. It’s lightweight and temperature-regulating, which has become a staple of professional rugby jerseys. In every way, it is very different from the first Australian rugby jerseys that were first worn in 1899.
