Metaphors For Growing Old
Metaphors appear in our everyday speech. A job is sometimes called a coalfield or a salt mine, and climbing a ladder, an oil rig, or playing in a jungle gym are variously used to describe the progress of a job. And in human behavior, a beautiful person can be called a loser who misses us. We have to hope like hell, though, that we don’t get caught with our eyes popping out of our heads.
Metaphors are also used to refer to old age. We talk about someone being on top of a mountain, or beyond the day they are using. And, because Australians love their sport, it’s no surprise that sports metaphors are used appropriately when it comes to ageing.
Cricket’s metaphors are often very visible. It could be because cricket is Australia’s national sport, for the summer. The honored guest at the funeral would have had a good ride, if only he hadn’t fallen on the spot. Reaching the age of 100, or hitting the ton, is the goal of many long-term islanders. And, as we get older, we tend to let more things go to the manager: we can’t worry about it. Age brings more opportunities for whiteouts, catches, fumbles, hits for six, etc.
Sport is described as the best driver. It is important for us old timers to stay on the ball: to be in the driver’s seat of our lives. And, even when someone disagrees with our opinion (ref. or ump., for example) can be caught with one eye.
If games aren’t your cup of tea, there are plenty of other metaphors to borrow. If the game is cards, for example, we should hold hands and play the cards as best we can. If we stay in it, we will soon be caught by the hand we love.
Did I mention that metaphors can be overused? Here are two that appeared last week. The Australian cricket manager has been described as ‘acting like a pot with its lid off’. And a group of football fans were labeled ‘animal heads’.
