Spain Crowned 2010 World Cup Soccer Champions
The 2010 World Cup, held in South Africa, ended on July 11, 2010, with Spain making history as World Cup champions for the first time. It was the first time Spain had made it past the semi-finals since 1950.
Spain defeated the Netherlands 1-0, but the Dutch fought until the end, in a match that went into extra time and saw the winning goal in the 116th minute of the match. It was midfielder, Andres INIESTA who scored the golden goal to secure the match and the championship. The Dutch were 10 down when they picked up a couple of yellow cards in the game and had a few chances.
Spain did an amazing job in the World Cup qualifiers and won 10 out of 10 matches to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. However, they suffered a shock defeat in their opening group game against Switzerland.
The EURO 2008 players managed to do well in the other two group games and won against Chile and Honduras. They are at the top of Group H with 6 points to go in the Round of 16 where they eliminated Portugal with only one goal.
With the victory in Portugal, the European Champions faced Paraguay in the quarter-finals which was a game full of many games. However, Spain managed to win with a narrow 1-0 victory.
When Spain went to the semi-finals, they had to take on a young, but impressive German team. Although Spain dominated the game, in terms of possession, it was another narrow 1-0 victory, but enough to see them through to the final.
Spain, for the most part, played a more restrained game and used their strengths to dominate possession more than any other team in the tournament. The best scorer was David VILLA (5 goals), followed by Andres INIESTA (2 goals) and Carles PUYOL (1 goal). They scored eight goals and conceded only two.
Iker CASILLAS, Spain’s captain and goalkeeper, won the adidas Golden Glove Award – he conceded just two goals. Andres INIESTA was awarded the Budweiser Man of the Match award in the final. Spain also won the FIFA Fair Play award.
