Learning From the World Cup Even With a US Loss
The trip was amazing, as the US mens team beat England (from behind fashion), beat Slovenia after going down 2-0 and then in the 91st minute (yes during stoppage time) scored the winning goal. Algeria. They entered the round of 16 without a loss and were ready to make another emotional victory after coming from behind to draw 1-1 at the end of regulation. Ghana, however, struck back first and took the lead which ended the upset of the US soccer team with a 2-1 loss. The returning child can return this time.
For you soccer fans, I apologize for the painful reminder, but there are three things we can all learn from the US team. Whether you play football, run, swim, bike, play tennis or just walk for exercise, these courses can help you avoid the depression that is still plaguing the US team (and probably will be for another 4 years).
1. Proper Preparation – The final minutes of a football game can be won or lost by proper preparation. How is your endurance? Are you well prepared to participate in your event (or sport)? If you take the time to prepare you can avoid injury and perform at your highest level. Appropriate equipment may be included, including the use of running shoes or soccer cleats. It may also include dynamic stretching instead of static stretching to avoid injury.
2. Learn From Your Mistakes – One mistake can win or lose a game or cause serious injury. Team USA allowed either team to take the lead, but was able to make the necessary adjustments to get back into the game. Most of us (and ultimately the US team) can’t keep making the same mistakes and recover. What can you do to make sure you’re on the right track? Do you need orthotics or monitoring of how you run or walk to reduce the risk of re-injury? Are you overtraining or undertraining? Are you eating right? Everyone can learn from our mistakes and become better at our actions.
3. Prophylaxis – Also called “preventive measures”. Had the US not conceded a goal in the first half and the first overtime, they would have had a chance to win. Likewise, we can take steps to prevent injury and not wait for injury (or loss) to change. Replace running shoes regularly to avoid heartbreak. Don’t wait for an Achilles tendon injury to start stretching properly. Safety measures are very important in any sport or exercise.
Although I am disappointed that the US is not playing in the World Cup, I have learned from them and can do better in any sport or event that I do.
