Fawlty Towers Anagrams – Just What is Written on the Sign in the Title Sequence?

Which swear word was the only complete Fawlty Towers as featured in the titles of the seminal seventies sitcom? It was used in the last but one episode (ie the eleventh – the show was all about quality and not quantity), The Anniversary. All of the anagrams used in the title sequence of some sections were just a few anagrams; so he didn’t use all the letters. So while Flay Otters and Watery Fowls are both fine, they just use some characters – to paraphrase Eric Morecambe, ‘they use some characters, but not in the right order.’

But what about Fawlty Towers itself? It’s well known, I think, that the Monty Python gang were in Torquay to film a movie and stayed in the Gleneagles Hotel in the town. Later all the other members of the group and the staff left, but John Cleese was so impressed by the behavior of the owner of Gleneagles, Donald Sinclair, that he and his wife Connie Booth stayed. Of course what he saw there (or claimed to have seen) has now become legend in the 12 hour-long episodes that make up the entire Fawlty Towers series.

In addition to writing the series, Cleese and Booth took on the roles of two Fawlty Towers characters, Basil Fawlty (the hotel’s owner) and Polly Sherman (a maid and more). Prunella Scales took the role of Sybil, Basil’s wife – a strange combination of a woman, sometimes in control, but at the same time suffering. The fourth and final role was that of Manuel, Fawlty’s Spanish waiter. This was taken by German-born British actor Andrew Sachs. Using his ability to learn English as a second language helped Sachs realize that Manuel was in danger as he struggled to understand what was going on in the world in this harsh environment.

But what about the actual parts? Well, as I have said before and as is well known, there were only twelve episodes of Fawlty Towers. It is shown weekly on BBC2 in six episodes. The first ran from 19 September to 24 October 1975. The second ran from 19 February to 19 March 1979 with the sixth and final episode being delayed until 25 October that year due to a strike by the BBC. The first series gave us the pleasure of A Touch of Class; Builders; Wedding Party; Hotel Managers; Gourmet Night also, Germans. Series 2 featured Communication Problems; The Psychiatrist; Waldorf salad; The Kipper and the Corpse; A reminder and last but not least, Basil the Rat. The best for me would have to be the Germans, a bit clichéd maybe (on my part) but what the heck, they’re both brilliant and one has to decide who they like.
