Mandela (Madiba)

A day of history. A day that will never be forgotten. The day Nelson Mandela was released from prison. That day, South Africa was on everyone’s lips. History was also recorded on the same day (it’s not good with dates so sue me for not remembering the exact date but the pictures are still fresh).

Nelson Mandela traveled the world in a big way. A person of honor and respect, a person with a heart for people. This man had every reason to hate and blame him, but instead, he came and started building a better future for South Africa.

No Bush or Clinton, no Queen or Prince in this world has done much to try and unite, not only South Africa but the whole world.

Some South Africans, for political reasons, tried to “black” (dislike) but made it too difficult. Although he is 90 years old, close to 91 (18 July 2009), he is still the leader of the world and the father of South Africans. The man who made long-sleeved shirts fashionable in South Africa and brought us spectacular dances; the Madiba jive.

Madiba, he united us wherever he went. In 1995 the country watched the rugby world cup as a unit and we cheered together in the streets when the Springboks (South Africa) won. He brought us the magic of Madiba on the world stage. I have never been big on football but a sense of unity led me to watch that historic match in 1996 when South Africa (Bafana Bafana) won the African Cup of Nations.

One day he will be gone (that day South Africa and the world will stop) but he will never leave. Obama, you have a decision to make.

If you want to experience the magic of Madiba and learn the Madiba jive, then South Africa is the place to go.

Long live MADIBA!

Soccer World Cup 2010

Danny Jordaan, you have lifted us up a notch. I wish I could express the joy, happiness and pride I had and still have in Afrikaans, my language, when they announced that South Africa won the 2010 World Soccer World Cup. I believe that God is on our side as a people. from South Africa. You’ve done a great job and I know you’re still up at night but you see every challenge as a challenge to convince the world that we’ve hit the big time. When I saw on the news that the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium was almost ready, it was confirmation that everything is on track.

You must have paid leave for one year after the world cup. I have to talk to the next president of the country, Reverend Kenneth Meshoe, to make sure.

Bafana Bafana, now is your time to shine. You showed us in 1996 that you are a force to be reckoned with. Well, there was a long and very depressing low but you have restored our hope. Just play game by game and put South Africa ahead. Well Rev Meshoe won’t give you a year off when you win because the Premier Soccer League and FIFA will fight him tooth and nail, but I know you will get huge bonuses.

No pressure? Of course there is no pressure, it can’t help dreaming. Just go out there and make us proud.

With the Confederations Cup coming up in a few months, you have the chance to play against football’s big guns. Make the most of your opportunities.

The only problem I have with the 2010 soccer world cup is that we as a nation asked God, in the big stadium, to give us grace and invitation but he did not thank him the same when we were declared winners. I hope we can fix that soon. South Africa will be greatly blessed when we bless God.

Thank you Father.

Nations of the world, we await your arrival. Are you ready for an African experience that you have never thought of? Book your flight, accommodation and seats now.

Migraines

This morning I watched Morning Live, a two-hour reality show, and I just knew that we are a nation to be reckoned with. When I turned on the TV, Leanne was talking to the professors about migraines and the advanced surgery they are doing in South Africa. Apparently people are flying in from different continents to do this.

Let me make two announcements.

1.”South Africa, we’re taking your headache away. Book your flight now, you’ll never take another headache pill again.”

2.”Is your husband giving you a headache, flying to the beach, sun, wild animals, accommodation, friendly people and the Evita Party. We’re taking the headache out and giving you a new husband. Men, you can have the same.”

Hearts

Years ago, when I was a young man we gave the world Doctor Chris Barnard, a heart surgeon. He performed the first heart transplant at Grootte Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.

His success! It is still a mystery and a miracle to me. We thank God for giving us wisdom and knowledge to be able to do such miracles.

Do you want a new life? South Africa will not only give you a new life but also a new heart. After joking about it, I can see the spiritual meaning of a new heart. Many times people will say that you need a change of heart so that the energy is gone. Excuse me, while I think of something I should say. I am not a writer with a flow of ideas. I’m just Steven D, who sees and says.

People of the world, don’t we all need a new heart? Aren’t we tired of war, hatred and cruelty? Our hearts must return to their Creator.

Rugby

Twice champions of the world cup. Springboks are our proud export product. England, Australia, New Zeeland, France and others, do you admire us? Please don’t answer me, I might regret asking this question.

Under the magic of Madiba we won the national cup in 1995 and twelve years later we did it again. I know that America and other countries are not known for rugby, but they have other sports that they are very good at.

So, if you are in one of those countries and want to have some rugby “gees” (spirit) than Newlands in Cape Town or Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria is the place to be.

Peter De Villiers, the coach of those boys, the next world cup is just around the corner. You are two years old.

Cricket

Proteas (South African National Cricket Team) you did us proud. Why is the Aussie so quiet? We want you to come and visit our country to welcome guests but we don’t know how to do it without laughing. Please, we have nothing against the Aussies, it is on the cricket field that we know we are facing our greatest enemy.

When you visit South Africa for the second part of the cricket tour, we will be at our best unless Ponting hits a six. Don’t expect to feel any joy when it happens. From the stadium we will give you all our love.

Having said all that, remember, we’re still running for 1st place in the practice field. Bring your flags and kangaroos but don’t ask for mercy, you won’t get that.

This weekend the SA Open tennis tournament returned with a bang. We have the best golf courses in the world. Flooding is common in South Africa. We had our share of world class boxers. Do you have everything in your country?

Well, you don’t have Desmond Tutu!
