No More a Real Game!
Do you remember the year 2001, when Dravid & Laxman played a match winning partnership of 376 or Brian Lara’s 153 against Glenn McGrath & Shane Warne? For someone who has been a cricket fan during these years when there was no such format called T20, cricket was white.
Ever since the 50th edition of the game in the 1980’s, Test cricket was still considered a real game until the new era of fast-paced cricket came along which took away the beauty of the game. When we talk about legends of the game, we often hear about Viv Richards, Sachin Tendulkar, Wasim Akram, Steve Waugh, Brian Lara, Shane Warne and so on. Both the players pulled the trigger in the five-day format. How many times have you heard pundits talking about Michael Bevan or Sunil Narine who have been amazing in short form but not in long form.
I became a fan in 2010 when the T20 brand made its place in the market. I was fascinated by the game which is fast and fun. You see hard hits, doosras, shots more often than before. But that same year, I decided to watch a test game on TV. I started watching on Day 1, thinking about what happened next. I sat on the bench until the 5-day match was over. It was completely addictive. Can anyone guess what was so special about it? Well, making an innings, the spirit of the game, aggressive attempts, technique & skill, the chance to get back into the game in every session… These are just a few things that made me enjoy this format to the fullest. IPL is held every year and as the years go by my interest in the fast format starts to wane.
Teams are only made one day after the same player ducks out. Every year we see the same thing happening… bats swinging all over the place, bowlers who are considered great in the long format being beaten by average batsmen who are just swinging their bats all over the place in the middle of nowhere. of line & height bowling. On the other hand I’m looking at James Anderson who is getting wickets with his long range swing. Now this is a much better thing than before. There is a saying… appearance is temporary but class is permanent. So this class is in the form of three hours. Sorry to say but I don’t see the class of MS Dhoni’s sixes or the batting of Virat Kohli…
Now looking at the business side, T20 gives the boards everything they need to get the most out of it – short time, more time, players getting a little tired, finding changes that work together to make more money. For a rookie cricket watcher it is three hours of entertainment like a movie but for a true cricketer who has seen the likes of Mcgrath, Warne, Steve Waugh, Dravid, Ponting over the years, it is just plastic. There must be ways in which the traditional form can be preserved in the future. I see several countries like India, Australia, England are supporting this form of cricket and other countries are managing with short format to survive in the long run. We have heard about the great West-Indies era in the 70’s & 80’s. The team is now ranked 8th in Tests and ninth in ODIs. This is only due to lack of participation. Currently there are three countries that dominate the cricket world with India at the top. Thanks to the popular ash tours that are helping this form to exist for a long time.
An MCC survey revealed that only 7% of cricket viewers in India prefer Test cricket as a positive format. This number is frightening to know. I love watching practice cricket especially in England, where the ball is swinging in the air at every delivery. The last time India beat England at their home was in 2007. The team had great players like Dravid, Laxman, Kumble, Ganguly, Tendulkar… It was the same year that the IPL storm started and these players gradually faded away Events of the day together. I would say that England is the place where batting is really tested in 5 day matches. Even Virat Kohli who has scored every run had time to struggle with the likes of Anderson & Broad in their conditions. This is where your true strategy is tested. South Africa’s recent collapse on the Nagpur pitch has shown how Test cricket has gone down as the match ends in just three days. Some of the legends also expressed their concerns after the game.
Now, cricket organizations have to make a plan to reserve several months of the year so that test cricket can be presented to the audience on a regular basis to generate interest. Otherwise, it faces a very dark future.
