Fight Racism Unitedly, No Knee-Jerk Kockish Controversy Please!

It is unfortunate that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup-2021 has to be affected by unnecessary controversies. Has any team at an international tournament ever refused to play the national anthem or any other team protesting against their opponents to play the national anthem? No, it is a well-known tradition in all such competitions in various fields of sports. Therefore, the ‘personal choice’ disease does not come into play here. So, why does this disease have to come at ‘taking the knee’ for the best of reasons? During our school days our teachers ordered us to kneel on countless occasions, apparently to correct our mistakes, and that is why we are better people today. Did we decide to exercise our democratic choice in these meetings? The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, which began in 2013 ‘as a sustainable political and social movement that opposes incidents of police brutality and violence caused by racism against black people’ is recognized worldwide. The group had its problems, but after the police brutally killed the black protester George Floyd in the US in 2020 it became known around the world, and Michael Holding, the former cricketer of the West Indies, tried to bring it back. The cricket field-unfortunately this gentleman’s game has seen the ugliness of racism many times in the game of cricket, not only against the blacks, but also against the so-called ‘black’ players.

We have seen in many of the matches played so far in the World Cup groups taking a knee before starting to show their solidarity against the evils of racism. The ICC did not issue any directive in this regard, but it left the parties to their own devices. Cricket South Africa (CSA), a country that has been boycotted by the international community for years because of its notorious apartheid policy, has set a good example by making its team mandatory before kick-off. So, what’s wrong with following these ideals, and how does the question of personal choice come into play in international affairs? Team India also acted according to the instructions of their cricket team, and England also showed their actions in their match against West Indies like many other teams.

A successful performance also occurred during South Africa’s opening match against Australia; of course, excluding all players. But suddenly and dramatically when the encounter was against West Indies, South African opener and wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock made headlines, citing his refusal to kneel for reasons. Not only did he refuse to make a mark, but he left the game in the final minutes which was confirmed by the CSA. This is very confusing, because de Kock has also been a cricketer in the Indian Premiere League (IPL) for many years, playing for the Mumbai Indians (interest may release him soon due to problems) which included black and ‘ colored players; in fact, India is a country of colored people only. So, why didn’t de Kock refuse to play with them continuously, as a member of the team? If his ‘decisions’ don’t agree with the BLM movement then it smacks of racism, or maybe de Kock is a supporter of the ‘white supremacy’ theory put forward by the former President of the USA, Donald Trump. We are criticizing his performance in the World Cup which could affect his entire cricket career, and South Africa, obviously, would not want to lose such a great player. The CSA has to make a final decision on the future of Quinton de Kock as some media reports indicate that the player has withdrawn from the competition while others fear that this was the last time he will see de Kock on the field.

We hope for a peaceful solution for all those involved who have a noble cause, respect for the goals and leadership of Nelson Mandela and appropriate punishment for anyone who is guilty of racism. The ICC, should take this opportunity to make ‘sin’ acceptable to all parties involved. The organization justly prohibits political or religious activities, but in the pursuit of this good cause there can be no doubt about the principles of democratic elections.

In the controversial match against West Indies, South Africa won easily, without de Kock. In another match, Afghanistan in Group-2 had a huge win over Group-B qualifiers Scotland, bigger than Pakistan’s win over India. Pakistan continued their impressive run by defeating New Zealand, despite struggling to chase down a paltry target of 135 runs. England, who are in Group-1, continued their struggle against Bangladesh. Pakistan and England seem to be enjoying their bowling opportunities with the pitches being slow and dewy afterwards. After making history by reaching the Super-12 for the first time, and defeating well-placed Ireland, Namibia won their first World Cup match against Scotland with a consolation in Group-2.
