2007 ICC World Cup Cricket
The Cricket World Cup is a major one-day International Cricket (ODI) tournament, organized by Cricket’s governing body – the International Cricket Council (ICC). The tournament is held once every four years and the ICC selects the venue for the tournament. The ICC Cricket World Cup is the most sought-after World Cricket Cup tournament and is an event watched by millions around the world.
The 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup is being held in the West Indies. This is the first time in the history of the Cricket World Cup, that the tournament is being held in the West Indies. The decision to host the World Cup in the West Indies was a result of the International Cricket Council’s rotation policy.
Sixteen countries are competing against each other in this year’s World Cup. All the cricket teams competing in the world championship are divided into four groups – Group A (Australia, South Africa, Netherlands, Scotland), Group B (Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, Bermuda), Group C (New Zealand, Kenya, England, Canada) Group D (West Indies, Ireland, Pakistan, Zimbabwe). In total, there have been 51 matches played before reaching the World Cup finals.
So far the teams that have entered the Super 8 stage are Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa, England, Ireland and Bangladesh.
There have been some interesting developments in the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup. The Irish cricket team is in danger, firstly with its attack against Zimbabwe (this was the third Cricket World Cup) and secondly, the defeat of Pakistan, which made the team reach the Super 8. stage. Australian batsman Mathew Hayden scored the fastest World Cup hundred from all 66 balls in the match between Australia and New Zealand. For the first time in the World Cricket Cup, Bangladesh entered the Super 8, defeating the cricket teams of India and Bermuda.
Looking at each team making the Super 8, we find they all show a lot of promise, which means an exciting game.
o Australia – The team are the defending champions of the World Cricket Cup. They have faced a number of problems with key players Andrew Symonds and Matthew Hayden facing injury problems and speedster Brett Lee out of the game due to injury. However, their strong wins against Scotland, the Netherlands and South Africa, show that they are not willing to stop winning the trophy.
o Bangladesh – This is a team that has reached the Super 8 which has surprised everyone. Their coach Dav Whatmore (who led Sri Lanka to a stunning victory in 1996), has brought out the best in the team members. Loti is expected to play in this competition.
o England – Their strong points are their key players Kevin Pietersen (world number one batsman) and Flintoff (bowler).
o However, in the world cup, the team lost to New Zealand and had to face Canada. Andrew Flintoff was fined for drinking heavily on the night. They need to show their full potential to win the team in Super 8.
o Ireland – They are showing great strength and are making progress, after the shocking defeat of Pakistan. Their additional points include strong team players and an excellent approach from Adrian Birrell’s outfit.
o New Zealand – This is a team expected to enter the semi-finals with a strong batsman, left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori, and good batting.
o South Africa – They have just beaten teams in Group A and sent one clear message – they are obviously cup contenders. A good fight is their binding; however, they still need a good spinner in their team.
o Sri Lanka – They were the champions of the World Cricket Cup in 1996 and are fighting hard in every match and winning. They have a talented team with batsmen Kumar Sangakkara, captain Mahela Jayawardene, openers Upul Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuriya, bowler Muttiah Muralitharan.
o West Indies – Their opening wins against Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Ireland have put them in the lead. As a host they are doing a lot for the success of the game and have match winning players like Chris Gayle, Lara, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dwayne Bravo. In this way they seem to be able to go to the semi-finals.
The Super 8 stage of the World Cup will begin on Tuesday night between Australia and the West Indies in Antigua and the results will determine the four teams that will play in the semi-finals.
However, despite the excitement and joy in the cricket field, the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup has been overshadowed by the death of Pakistan Cricket team coach Bob Woolmer. He was found dead in his hotel room the day after the team’s defeat in Ireland and there is an investigation into the matter.
At the end of the entire competition, there will be only one winner! With the Super 8 players on stage, all ready to fight till the end, the audience around the world is eagerly waiting to find the winner of the World Cricket Cup.
