All About 12th Edition of Cricket World Cup
As you read in my earlier article, Cricket is played in three formats – Test, One Day and T20. In order to decide the winner of this match, the international cup is played in One Day format. I’ve covered a few details about its upcoming global database, which launches later this month.
The 2019 cricket world cup, starting on 30 May 2019, is the 12th edition of the men’s international cricket tournament. The showpiece is the most popular prize in the game, which will be played between 10 teams. The world cup is always played in One Day format. The event is being held in ODI format. England & Wales will play their hosts, for the fifth time, and the first time since 1999.
As a measure of qualification, eight teams only qualified based on their ODI rankings. The last two rounds were contested by six teams in the tournament which was played in 2018. This was the most contested tournament in Zimbabwe. The 6 teams were divided into two groups, with each team playing two games in the group. The top two teams in each group played in the semi-finals, and the winners of the semi-finals played in the final.
India, Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa, and Sri Lanka are the only teams that managed to make it to the rankings. West Indies and Afghanistan are the only countries that entered through the qualifying process. Looking at its rich cricket history, West Indies forced entry through the qualifiers was a tough pill to swallow for many cricket fans.
Based on recent form and match-winning record, hosts England and India were declared the winners of the tournament. Australia – the defending champions – are the dark horses, who can surprise few teams to win the world cup. South Africa has been involved since its inception in international cricket, not to go beyond the semifinals. Their fans hope that South Africa will break this streak to win the world cup this time.
Summary of Schedule
The event will begin on 30 May 2019, and will last for 46 days. Hosts England will play South Africa in the opening match. The two semi-finals will be played on 9 July and 11 July respectively, with the final taking place on 14 July, Sunday.
