Why Indigenous Nigerian Coaches Cannot Handle The Super Eagles

The clamor for coaches to handle especially the Nigerian national team, popularly known as the Super Eagles, has been going on for a long time. The issue of national pride is always cited as one of the main reasons why the school’s supporters continue their agitation.

At one point, I was almost attracted to the school’s curriculum, perhaps out of sympathy for the local coaches who paid their salaries in terms of football success.

I was almost overwhelmed by what we have done in the cadet world cup especially the under 17 team. Nigeria has won the cup 3 times since it was founded in China since 1985, when a local coach named Christian Chukwu, a former captain of this country’s senior team, he led a team of undisclosed boys from the Asian country of China to put their names in the Guinness book of world records as the first country in the world to win the competition and then with the help of Kodak.

Before they left the shores of Nigeria, no one gave them the slightest chance of success. When they finally returned home with the trophy, they were very happy to celebrate their victory. And as we said earlier, this work has been repeated twice after the first edition, surprisingly in the same continent of Asia. First, it was China in 1985, then Japan in 1993 and most recently in Korea in 2007.

In these three events, our local coaches were the leaders, first was Chairman Christian Chukwu, then Fanny Ammun and recently the late Yomi Tella who died a few weeks after returning from a successful tour in Korea.

In 1996, another victory happened in a football match with Nigeria in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States of America. There, a small Nigerian team led by Dutchman Bonfrere-Jo took the world by storm by winning an Olympic gold medal that has eluded Brazil since registering their name as the world’s biggest nation, after winning it all. there’s success in football at every level of the sport he’s hoping for at the Olympics (and I’m starting to think he’s jinxed). Surprisingly, they were eliminated in the semi-final by Nigeria in the top game that the bookies had already awarded to the Brazilians. The incident that led to Brazil’s elimination from the Atlanta Olympics is a topic for another day.

But the story here is that Nigeria won the gold of the football under the guidance of a foreign coach, and it is known that Nigeria won the Africa Cup of Nations twice, the first time in 1980 was under the Brazilian player known as Otto Gloria. the second time was in 1994 in Tunisia under the famous and famous Dutchman named Clement Westerhof, he was the same man who qualified Nigeria for its first world football cup known as USA 94. It was a double challenge for the Dutchman who earlier in the year won the cup of African nations in the best possible way, thus sending a signal to the world about Nigeria’s readiness to take its rightful place in world football.

So why do foreigners do better than local teachers when they reach a high level?

I would like to explain the reasons in two ways, the first is the lack of leadership in the Nigerian Football Association. Most of the people who are involved in football in Nigeria on a daily basis, do not know anything about the game and its intricacies. The Nigerian Football Association is politicized and is mainly used as a tool for political lobbying in support of elections. Foreign teachers are successful because they are employed under a well-signed and sealed contract, they are given contracts that encourage them to do well.

When it comes to local coaches, it’s a different ball game. They are not given a concrete contract and when it happens, the great disruption of the authorities in the sports ministry and the football governing body makes the decisions of these types of coaches difficult. The issue of job security is another determining factor. Teachers are hired and fired when they want, most of them have salary arrears for several months, and they should not talk about such matters otherwise it will be seen as destructive and disobedient because these coaches treat them as employees of the ministry.

The issue of respect for players is a different kettle of fish when it comes to coaching the national team. Come to think of it, some of these players earn up to eighty thousand British Pounds per week in their various European clubs, which translates to local currency, into millions of Naira which can cover the two year salary of these coaches. Now, mentally, the student is now more comfortable than the teacher, he has achieved more than the so-called teacher and therefore it is difficult for him to submit under the authority of a person who has never played professional football all his life.

Foreign coaches are highly respected by players and administrators and this makes them superior to their local counterparts.

Until the time when local coaches are respected as much as foreign coaches in terms of salary and free hand to work without interference, the ability of a native coach to succeed with a big football team seems like a mirage for now and in the future.
