Super Falcons Set to Reclaim Their Birth Rights
Nigeria’s Super Falcons are expected to reclaim their birthright as Africa’s women’s football team, as the African Women’s Championship kicks off in South Africa. The perennial champions who won 5 out of 6 of the tournament only lost the final edition to Equatorial Guinea who were also the last owners.
The Nigerian team could lose the final edition by reducing their opponent; and maybe because the group also had some physical problems at the time. This time, they are planning to return to counting.
One of the things that will help the birds to increase is the teachers who are led by the former top scorer in Africa Uche Eucharia who has a lot of experience having participated in the first 3 Women’s World Cups. He was also at the first edition of the African Championship held in Abeokuta, Nigeria in 1998 as an assistant coach of the team.
Uche Eucharia is assisted by another former member of the falcons, Anne Agumanu who was the goalkeeper during her time. With the team being handled by veteran players who know the strengths and weaknesses of different teams, it would be easy for them to do well in South Africa and ultimately win.
Nigeria’s current squad is mixed and young with some of the players having graduated from the U-20s who made it to the finals of the women’s youth tournament in Germany this year.
However, one area where the falcon needs to work harder is the attacking area; it was clear at the U-20 Championship in Germany that the team was struggling to convert the begging opportunities they had. With an experienced player as the current coach, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
The team is very strong in midfield and defence: they only need to add one or two good strikers to increase the efforts of the players. If the team can settle in the way the U-20 and U-17 did recently, it will be easy for them to win with the addition of experienced veteran hands.
The Lions play their first game against Mali on 1 November. Other teams in their group are South Africa and Tanzania. The biggest threat to their ambition is the team they have that has experience even though they haven’t won any championships.
