Victor Nosa Ikpeba – The Undisputed Prince of Monaco
The dynamic Victor Ikpeba started his career at African Continental Bank FC in Lagos, before representing the Nigeria U-17 team that participated in the 1989 FIFA U-17 World Cup held in Scotland. His performance in the tournament led the Belgian footballers to sign him to the Belgian youth team-RFC Liege. He soon established himself as a clinical finalist after making 79 appearances and scoring 27 goals for the Belgian team.
In 1994 the French club- Monaco FC coached by Arsenal’s technical expert Arsene Wenger shot him. Victor Ikpeba had the most exciting time of his football career in Monaco, when he helped the French team to win the League title. He also received an invitation to the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Soccer team in Nigeria. The team eventually won Gold after defeating Argentina in the final.
The icing on the cake for the Delta State born Footballer came in 1997 when he won the African footballer of the year award after a successful season with Monaco. He played a total of 169 games and scored 55 goals for the Monaco team. This success earned him the title “Prince of Monaco”.
After leaving Monaco for Borussia Dortmund in 1999, his career took a nosedive which took a turn for the worst in 2000 after the death of his young wife- Atinuke through breast cancer. Subsequent attempts to revive his career with Real Betis of Spain, Al-Ittihad of Libya and Charleroi FC of Belgium did not bear much fruit, as he retired from playing in 2005.
It is worth noting that Victor Ikpeba was an important part of the Super Eagles team from 1993- 2000. He played all 30 games and scored 3 goals for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in all competitions.
His worst miss came in the 2000 African Cup of Nations final between Nigeria and Ghana when he scored against Cameroon in the penalty shootout but was deemed to have missed the ball. He held his head in disbelief and the referee and his assistant ruled that it was not a goal. Television replays later showed that the entire ball had indeed crossed the line. Nigeria eventually lost the match.
He was a member of the Super Eagles team that participated in the 1994 African Nations Cup held in Tunisia and the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups held in the United States and Spain respectively. He is a sports analyst for the South African television station Super Sports Channel.
