Ghana 2008 and the Spirit of Nationalism

Finally, the golden jubilee 26th Africa Cup of Nations – Ghana 2008 tournament is here. Although Ghana could not win the gold, they managed to win the bronze medal; and the country is richer in patriotism than before.

But one legacy that Ghanaians have left behind in the race that must not be allowed to leave us as a people is the Spirit of Nationalism. And 23 young players out of 22 million coaches, who carried the whole world on their weak shoulders and sweating under a lot of pressure from January 20 to February 10, 2008, were the Black Stars of Ghana. The leading stars played tricks with their “football” skills and crowned them with their “kangaroonistic” looking legs and pinched toes to walk. It was painful and contagious like a cold. It didn’t take long for other African countries, starting with the mighty Nigeria, to copy their dance styles. No piracy here, please! Michael Essien of Ghana is the originator, founder and founder of the “Kangaroonistic” dance in Africa and in the world of football. Anyone who wants to copy that dance must get permission from him. Time!

23 What can we tell the brave? “Ghana Black Starts, “Ayikooo!” Bravo! He has done what Napoleon could not. And we must always remember this African proverb: “Those who have never fought are always happy to get angry and blame the armies for not fighting enough.” Don’t blame them because they don’t know how monkeys sweat.

In fact, Ghana fared much better. Able to crush Guinea 2 – 1; pip Namibia 1 – 0; beating Nigeria 2 – 1; killing people in Cote d’Ivoire 4- 2, before going down 0 – 1 against Cameroon due to some technical problems and a “conspiracy” control scheme, was not in vain. In other words, apart from Namibia, all the countries that Ghana crushed like empty shells on the road before winning the Bronze medal are the strongest countries in African football. Just go and look at the FIFA rankings of countries across the continent before the Ghana 2008 tournament.

About 20 years ago, in 1987 to be exact, this writer watched an American movie at the Executive Theater of the then Ghana Film Industry Corporation (GFIC) in Accra. (I don’t really remember the title of the movie). But in the film, a little boy of about five years, who lives with his mother was cruel in a way. It was as if the child had spilled water on the dining table on purpose and his mother went crazy. The woman started shouting at him. He yelled and mocked and lied to the boy’s father who was not at home at the time. Suddenly, this little boy got up and looked his old mother in the face and answered: “Mother, why are you bothering me like this?” The woman was so shocked that she could not say anything.

How are some countries in this imperfect world able to instill or instill patriotism in their citizens to the point that when they do wrong in some way, most of their citizens are still ready to protect them or even sleep? their lives because of their countries? At what age do they begin to instill patriotism in the minds of their citizens? And what blessings do patriotic citizens expect from their countries?

Inspired by this “pure” spirit of nationalism, some Ghanaians went so far as to not only decorate themselves with the national colors, but also decorate their dogs, cats, rams, goats and birds, with Ghanaian flags – all cheering for their country. team – Black Stars. Even some foreigners in Ghana or foreigners who just came to watch the event were so filled with the spirit of Ghanaian nationalism that they started competing to show that they were more Ghanaians than Ghanaians themselves. (We say they are more Catholic than the Pope himself). It was just fun!

In August 2007, the Ministry of Information and National Orientation launched the National Orientation Sensitization Program at the Accra International Center. It is important that we quickly refresh our memory of the Five Principles of National Orientation that were unveiled at the event: 1. Pride in being a Ghanaian; 2. Love for our Country and the Spirit of “Ghana First”; 3. Good and “What – Do – it” Behavior; 4. Creativity and Accountability and 5. Commitment and Discipline.

One should do scientific research to know how this program affects people. However, looking casually so far, it will not be inappropriate to say that since the introduction of the National Orientation program, along with the slow but deliberate and steady efforts of the Ministry to inform people about the need to do things in a certain way. as a people, slowly but surely the spirit of patriotism or patriotism is being rekindled in the minds of many Ghanaians. We can say that, Pillar N0 1, “Proud to be a Ghanaian” is embedded in the hearts of many citizens of this loving and hospitable country.

Do you remember that during the competition, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Hon Oboshie Sai Cofie, had to issue a statement, reminding the nation that whenever the national anthem is played or played, every organization must stand up. and stay silent until the song is over? That was simple but profound advice about the world. Therefore, even in our concern to show the depth of patriotism, it is very important that we recognize these great principles of nationalism.

Although it is the ministry of information that started the process, it needs the cooperation of other organizations such as the National Commission on Civic Education, Ghana Education Service, Commission on Culture, Commission on Children, Churches, Mosques, Churches and parents and teachers themselves to be able to manage it effectively. the National Orientation program should work well in the interest of the country.

At this point, it is important to say a word of thanks to all Ghanaians from the President of the Republic to the car pushers at the Sodom and Gomorrah market for the great support given to the National Team. Ghana MPs made a better noise than even the Supporters Unions who are paid to make noise. For those pastors who threw away their orthodox cassocks for a moment and put on colorful dresses to preach with their congregations blowing trumpets in all churches wearing ethnic colors, God has seen the holy spirit of nationalism that has descended on them.

Our Muslim brothers and sisters as well as traditional worshipers could not give up on supporting the Black Stars. Have you seen that guy who always goes to the stadium with live birds? What about those who carried the RIPcoffins of other countries and opposition players? They were all part of the mental health system. But those who do not believe in God, God still loves them.

But if awards were given to individuals or groups of the best supporters of the Black Stars, the Ghanaian women would clear all the odds. Ghanaian women not only know how to play football but they can analyze the ball and support the national team in great style. My goodness! I saw women of all races and ages from toddlers to octogenarians supporting the Black Stars from January to December non-stop. It was incredible. Apart from supporting the Black Stars as a National Team, Ghanaian women immediately established women’s support organizations for every Black Star player.

Here is the list of Women Supporters Unions for all 23 players of the 2008 Ghana tournament:

These women’s charities are found in every home in Ghana today. And it was their singing, dancing and art alone that provided the necessary energy for the Black Stars to die for the nation. Any critics?

Closing ceremony

Ghana has succeeded in proving to the whole world through the Africa Cup of Nations that Africa is a continent of beautiful culture. The simple yet profound closing ceremony was unique in the history of the tournament. Only one person could take the trophy from the field to be presented to the winning team. But this simple act was shown by four strong bodybuilders who are known as badass men, carrying a small girl who looked like a great queen mother in a palanquin was a sight to behold.

The smiling “black angel” was adorned with golden royal ornaments and a traditional kente-style dress. Several “fontonfron” drummers inspired the foundations of African culture and Egyptian artists could not help but try their hand at drumming and dancing like the ancient Pharaohs. With their buoyant spirits buoyed, they respectfully and solemnly collected the shiny trophy they had brought with them from Egypt from the hands of the father of the President of the Republic of Ghana, HEJA Kufuor.

Ladies and gentlemen, although Ghana has not been able to achieve the dream of “Host and Win”, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has done the country proud. The tournament has elevated Ghana to the pinnacle of the world football pyramid. There is no country that has its name in the world today that can say that they have never heard of a country called Ghana in West Africa.

What needs to be done here if the world is not to cry for the milk is gone or to play the wrong game. We need to accept our small weaknesses, such as acceptance, giving tickets and fields like potatoes for our beautiful gardens. The current Black Stars must be maintained and maintained to keep them in shape at all times. There is a need to inject new blood of first class batsmen into the team. As for the technical and clinical aspects of this group, I leave it to the experts. If we do our homework very well, use our vision and ask God to guide us, come 2010, Ghana can win the African Nations Cup in Angola and the World Cup in South Africa already. Remember that he who laughs last…
