Coach Samson Siasia: A Brief Biography
Football is one of the most popular sports in Nigeria with over 50 million people spread across the 36 states of the country. The match proved to be pivotal in the emergence of the Super Eagles as one of the biggest acts in Africa.
The game has always enjoyed the support of other professionals who are known as football coaches. This is the key to any successful team, as it ensures that the players are well prepared and stable. In Nigeria, football coaches have been given a chance to become famous with the efforts of the Nigeria Football Federation to recruit local coaches to manage the national teams. One of the most popular artists in the country is none other than Samson Siasia.
His Brief History
Coach Samson Siasia remains Nigeria’s most popular football player to this day, and is his captain at the age groups. He is currently the Head Coach of the Senior National team- The Super Eagles of Nigeria which is ranked 4th in Africa. Coach Samson Siasia rose to fame in 2005 when he led the U-20 National team to second place at the FIFA U-20 tournament held in Holland.
The desire to succeed led him to recruit a new breed of football players for the 2008 Olympic football games held in Beijing China. He also made the headlines in Nigeria with the success of the Dream team 4 who reached the final and lost to eventual winners Argentina by a single goal.
In December 2010, he was appointed Head Coach of the Super Eagles after months of media speculation. He remains a firm believer in grassroots football and places great emphasis on players who have been sent to the Super Eagles’ senior level.
He is also the founder of the Siaone soccer academy which is currently located in Yenegoa Bayelsa State. The academy was adopted because of its interest in developing future talent and potential players for the U-17 National Football team.
A native of Bayelsa, he was part of the Super Eagles team that won the 2004 African Nations Cup in Tunisia. He was also a member of the Nigerian team that stunned the world at the FIFA World Cup held in the United States of America, where he scored a stunning goal against Argentina.
A member of Nigeria’s U-20 team that participated in the 1985 World Youth Championship, he was an active scout who played for top football clubs in France, Belgium and Saudi Arabia.
