3 Tips to Keep Soccer Referees on Your Side

Well, the critics aren’t biased (or should be) so you can’t get them ‘on your side’, but there are a few things you can do to get your team to get more 50/50 performances.

I’m an AYSO Coach and I’m also a qualified US Soccer and English FA Referee so get good feedback from players, coaches and players. Read the tips below and apply them to the following games:

1. Do not abuse the judge directly, no matter how bad his decisions are.

It’s completely pointless. Not only is there a chance that the judge will change their mind but they may challenge you when the next 50/50 decision is made. Yes, the referees should be impartial and base their decisions on what is happening on the pitch, but the truth is that they are only human and if you screamed in front of them 5 minutes ago and are now calling for a 50/50 decision, good luck. will it go to the other team when the judge makes a second decision and your abuse is still fresh in their mind.

If a player makes a call that you know is wrong, tell your players to get on with the game and forget about it. At half time or after time, you can mention it to the judge. Something simple along the lines of, “Sir, that was a nice handball when he scored the goal, I know you didn’t see it from your side so I understand why you didn’t call, don’t feel bad. Give. us the next handball idea please!”

The judge may realize they made a mistake and your credibility will increase the next time you have to make a decision.

2. Praise the referee when he makes a good call

Simple but very useful. Don’t be rude or yell “thank you sir” after every decision but when the judge makes a close call on a 50/50 or what you might consider a big decision, a “good call sir” or “thank you sir” goes a long way.

Everyone has a desire to receive praise, even judges, so massage the ego (yes, critics have egos too) without being overbearing or condescending. Even if it doesn’t directly benefit you in the game (although it probably will), chances are when a referee referees one of your games at the end of the season, he will remember your praise and you will benefit from it.

3. Do not think that you know the laws (laws) better than the judge; You probably won’t agree, so just let the judge get on with his job.

All AYSO competitors must be trained and reach the required standard to qualify. You may have played or coached the game for years and believe you know better than the referee, however this is not always the case.

Unless you’ve studied the rules of the game then it’s likely that you don’t understand many of the fouls and fouls that you constantly yell at the referee! I played semi-professionally for 15 years and thought I knew the rules well; What a mistake I made when I took my referee test (I ended up getting 99/100 on the test paper but after a few hours of studying I realized I didn’t understand half the rules!)
