1999 FIFA World Youth Championship – Flying Eagles Wobble and Fumble At Home
In 1999, Nigeria won the right to host the 12th FIFA World Youth Championship. That year was; The Flying Eagles were labeled as “rocking and rocking”. They started their World Cup campaign on home soil in disgrace, drawing 1-1 against Costa Rica when Julius Aghahowa scored in the 20th minute of the match, before taking action against Germany, who beat them. 2-0. The goals were scored by Ganiyu Shittu and Hashimu Garba in Minutes 69 and 81 respectively.

Pius Ikedia, Gbenga Okunowo, John Aranka, Eddy Dombraye and Ganiyu Shittu all converted their spot kicks. Republic of Ireland’s Thomas Heary misses his goal to set up a final between Nigeria and Mali.
The Flying Eagles had their work cut out for them, as they found the Malians hot to face in the quarterfinal match played at the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium in Enugu, eastern Nigeria. The Malians were so brutal in the quarter finals, that they won 3-1 against the harmless Eagles who could not fly when it mattered most. The main tormentor of the Flying Eagles was Malian midfielder Seydou Keita who later emerged as the winner of the Adidas Golden football award.
The disappointing defeat of the Flying Eagles caused chaos in the stadium, with the sacking of Dutch Coach Thijs Libregts from the Nigeria U-20 National team champions. This team had a lot of potential, but they couldn’t use their full potential. Other notable players in the team are: Joseph Yobo, Rabiu Afolabi, Julius Aghahowa, Haruna Babangida and Late goalkeeper Sam Okoye.
