Video Games – The Perfect Escape?

Why did you say yes to that last shandy? A kebab seemed like a good idea but your mouth now resembles Phil Jupiter’s underpants. And to top it all off, you are trapped in a dungeon full of lava and someone is stealing your daughter. Where did your life go wrong?

I have sent you news, it is very, very bad. You’re not just playing Super Mario Brothers, you’re spending your life “working” at a computer in an empty office surrounded by drones. Your only escape? Friday night drinking too much in Clapham, tonsil tennis with a suspected killer and jumping around in 8-bit smashing Goombas’ skulls with your giant Italian plumber’s fists the next morning (they didn’t come home with you).

Computer games started as an innocent thing. I remember my cousins had a version of Pong which although it was very difficult to get into the telly, it was fun for ten minutes. Hitting the ball around with paddles was not for Wimbledon. What it was, was an 8-bit version of the venerable AELTC tournament which was one of the first games I played on the Master System. To this day the game makes me happy, and I add work, I can’t help but feel like I’m on Center Court. Mainly because I couldn’t play toffee tennis.

Today, games like Grand Theft Auto and the Halo franchise take the opportunity to escape to new levels, allowing you to explore entire cities and experience your own incredible imagination while shooting bad guys. There’s a magazine on my desk right now with the word “hero” written on it, if only. And even though escapism is almost at its peak (except for virtual reality), it started way back in the 80s and had just as much impact then as it does now.

Adulthood has not changed much in the past three decades. Despite the advances in technology, which are said to make life easier, for most of us it’s always 9 to 5. Slavery to line someone’s pockets and come home exhausted. Eat your dinner, sit on the telly, sleep, repeat. Instead of rudeness, I think that life needs five needs: gain; to relax; imitation; competition is to be. Meanwhile, sitting here in an anonymous office I feel depressed, tired, lonely and like it’s just another killer day on the road that seems to be going nowhere. No reason is being fulfilled, I want to stay at home and play video games.

Success is easy. People who are going well in life and who feel that they are living a good life can point back to many things they have done well. Whether it’s steady progress at work, parenting or jumping on a plane, nothing beats the feeling of accomplishment. For those who are hungry for such activities, video games offer an easy alternative and the results are immediate. Going back to the original games of games like Pac-Man and Asteroids, you immediately benefit from the progress of the level and accumulation (sometimes reaching the prestigious board). Home consoles like the ZX Spectrum brought games like Manic Miner to the fore. This rise raises another point that these needs do not only affect the lives of adults but also for children. For growing children, feelings of success can be found in doing well in school, doing well in Physical Education, being praised for good attendance etc… How often can this happen? Sometimes in middle school, I felt more accomplished after nailing down a few Sonic games than I did during the day. With the xbox360 console, Microsoft introduced “Achievement” points based on unlocking hidden secrets or simply completing levels. Why did he do this? We all love rewards, especially if they are tangible. Although it was not as important as this development, it adds another level of success to the already hidden.

This brings me to another “need” – freedom. Or should I say, Relaxation through group. There is no need for me to go home and play a computer game where the protagonist is a Customer Service Representative who has to answer the phone and answer emails all day. They say that lunchtime is the best time to eat lunch outside the office, so that your mind is freed from work and relaxed accordingly. Video games work on the same theme as they can get you fired, leave your home life and go on to other amazing things. The aforementioned Super Mario Bros. is a good example. I believe it is the first real example of an ethereal world where you can explore and unlock hidden rewards instantly. Previous consoles and computers had games that had hidden levels, but the graphics and memory available before 1985 were difficult to do anything at this level. Throw in a superhero story where you have to rescue a princess and you have the whole package. I can talk about security all day but the great thing is that video games take you to another world with the click of a button where you can forget what your life is about.

As I said before, I was very serious about tennis as a child. Someone who wasn’t bad at tennis was Stefan Edberg. Although Wimbledon on MS had a license, it did not have the actual names of the players. But my word, did one of the characters look like the Swedish maestro. As you grow, role models are important. This seems like an obvious thing to say but how many children don’t have the right role models in their daily lives? We look at people and want to imitate them. We see them achieving great things and we want to achieve them ourselves. When we can’t do something, video games (especially game titles) are an easy way to imitate our heroes. I played World Cup Italia 90 on the Mega Drive more than I should have because it was the only way to bring up the tournament that I had. Imitation goes as far as wanting to be called the hero of an Italian plumber (one was also useless with women) or a shiny blue hedgehog that thwarts a wise man.

Imitation follows competition. There’s nothing like beating the game. All those notes and you still beat the CPU. Stay with Edberg. It’s also good to prove that you’re good at something, that you’re better than your peers. At work, I have few friends because of my lack of work. Do I want to be better than them? Feelings are elusive. Competition is good for the human spirit. What is always disputed is how successful people are and successful people thrive. The rewards are sometimes obvious, great competition, big pay rises – but sometimes not. Video games offer competition at all levels. Beat the CPU, beat your friends, conquer the world. Video games offer challenges when life falls behind them. Need a forum to prove you’re better than your peers? Catch Days of Thunder on the NES console (not all that impressed…). Multiplayer games have been around since the days of Pong and now video games have evolved into their own multi-million dollar industry.

This brings me to my final point – stay. Sega or Nintendo? If you’re into retro gaming that question alone probably triggers something inside of you. Why? Because choosing a machine isn’t just choosing a machine to play with, it’s choosing a gang, a life that has to be better than the other. Children and adults also experience discrimination every day. I was lucky at school because I had close friends that I still hang out with. Others were not so lucky. When you move to the tech world it’s only natural that you want to work for the company where you are. In your personal life, it is natural to want to be somewhere in the house with the people you love and where you feel you belong. Even before online gaming and its many communities and relationships, just saying in the arcade if you were a Mega Drive or SNES guy started a good conversation about Sonic or Mario alike. They weren’t just comforters, but you were.

As much as a vacation can help you relax or go to a football game to satisfy your cravings, there’s nothing quite like video games to provide the complete package after a long day at the coalface.
